Structural Intersectionality as a New Direction for Health Disparities Research

Patricia Homan et al.

Summary: This article introduces a structural intersectionality approach to study population health by analyzing macro-level structural inequality data in U.S. states. It explores the impact of different dimensions of structural oppression on health and finds that structural inequalities have the most significant impact on the health of black women.

Race and Ethnicity Considerations in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease and Stroke JACC Focus Seminar 3/9

Rohit Mital et al.

Summary: Despite significant advances in the fields of coronary artery disease (CAD) and stroke, there are notable racial and ethnic disparities. In addition to traditional cardiovascular risk factors, disparities in care provision, social determinants of health, and racial discrimination within and outside of the health care system also contribute to these differences. Improved culturally congruent communication about risk factors and symptoms is needed to achieve better and more equitable outcomes in CAD and stroke.

Neighborhood education status drives racial disparities in clinical outcomes in PPCM

Kelly D. Getz et al.

Summary: This study found that both Black race and neighborhood concentrated disadvantage index (NDI) are independently associated with adverse outcomes in women with PPCM. The neighborhood low education was most strongly associated with clinical outcome and partially explained differences in race. These results suggest interventions targeting social determinants of health in disadvantaged communities may help to mitigate outcome disparities.

Variations in Quality of Care by Sex and Social Determinants of Health Among Younger Adults With Acute Myocardial Infarction in the US and Canada

Valeria Raparelli et al.

Summary: The study found that besides sex, healthcare systems and social determinants of health (SDOH) are associated with the quality of care for young adults with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Being treated in the US was linked to low quality care, while only employment was associated with higher quality of in-hospital care.

Area Deprivation Index and Cardiac Readmissions: Evaluating Risk-Prediction in an Electronic Health Record

Amber E. Johnson et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association and predictive ability of neighborhood-level determinants, readmission risk, and mortality for heart failure, myocardial ischemia, and atrial fibrillation. The findings suggest that patients residing in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities are at higher risk of readmission and mortality following cardiac hospitalization. Measuring neighborhood deprivation can aid in identifying individuals at risk for adverse outcomes post-hospitalization.

Development and Validation of a Risk Prediction Model for 1-Year Readmission Among Young Adults Hospitalized for Acute Myocardial Infarction

Rachel P. Dreyer et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a risk prediction model for readmission within 1 year following hospitalization for acute myocardial infarction among young adults. The final model included predictors such as depressive symptoms, physical health, heart failure complications, and diabetes, suggesting that psychosocial factors may play a significant role in readmission risk.

Summary: Research shows that Black patients with AMI receive lower in-hospital quality of care compared to White patients, and they have a higher rate of cardiac readmission. Employment status is associated with quality of care, especially among Black patients.

Racism and Cardiology: A Global Call to Action

Shrilla Banerjee et al.

Summary: Racism and racial bias negatively affect the lives and cardiovascular health of minority individuals. This is reflected in the higher burden of cardiovascular disease risk factors among minority groups, which is often a result of racist policies limiting opportunities for them to live in healthy neighborhoods, access high-quality education and healthcare, and encounter racial bias when interacting with the healthcare system. To mitigate this impact, measures need to be taken at both institutional and individual levels to address racism and bias.
