Redox Shuttle-Based Electrolytes for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: Comprehensive Guidance, Recent Progress, and Future Perspective

Masud et al.

Summary: A redox electrolyte plays a crucial role in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) by regenerating dyes and minimizing charge recombination. I-/I3- redox shuttle is commonly used but limits the open-circuit voltage. Cobalt complexes with polypyridyl ligands and Cu-complex-based redox shuttles have been utilized to improve the Voc value. The replacement of suitable ligands or an alternative redox shuttle with a redox potential of 0.45-0.65 V is required to use highly efficient porphyrin and organic dyes.

PEDOT-graphene counter-electrode for solar and improved artificial light conversion in regular, bifacial and FTO-less cobalt mediated DSSCs

Carolina Hora et al.

Summary: Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) are a promising technology for indoor photovoltaics in powering wireless sensor nodes for Internet of Things (IoTs). This study presents a new PEDOT:PSS (PP) and graphene nano platelets (GNPs) composite layer as a counter-electrode for Co(III/II) mediated DSSCs, which exhibits higher electrochemical activity and protruding morphology. Despite the difference in catalytic activity, the PP:GNP counter-electrode shows comparable power conversion efficiency (PCE) to pristine PP in traditional DSSCs, but outperforms PP under artificial light.

Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Based on a New Class of Doubly Concerted Companion Dyes

Jiazhi Zou et al.

Summary: To develop efficient dye-sensitized solar cells, a new class of dye called concerted companion dye (CC dye) has been reported. These dyes exhibit panchromatic absorption and excellent photovoltaic performance. By wrapping the dye molecules with alkoxy chains of various lengths, the antiaggregation ability of the dyes is further enhanced, leading to improved photovoltaic performance. This research provides a new approach for constructing high-performance dye-sensitized solar cells.

D-π-A-structured organic sensitizers with π-extended auxiliary acceptor units for high-performance dye-sensitized solar cells

Hyung Jin Noh et al.

Summary: Two new D-pi-A structured dyes (SGT-160 and SGT-161) were designed and synthesized to modulate LUMO energy levels and investigate photophysical, electrochemical properties, and cell performances. The insertion of an additional ethynyl moiety significantly enhanced light-harvesting capability, while pi-extension in the acceptor part stabilized LUMO energy levels. DSSCs based on SGT-160 exhibited high power conversion efficiencies of 10.28%, while DSSCs based on SGT-161 and SGT-130 showed moderate efficiencies of 8.05% and 10.06%, respectively.
