Prognostic impact of extranodal extension (ENE) in surgically managed treatment-naive HPV-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma with nodal metastasis

Bin Xu et al.

Summary: This study suggests that extranodal extension (ENE) is an independent prognostic factor in HPV-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). Particularly, major ENE defined as a vertical extent of >= 4 mm or irregular soft tissue deposit independently predicts shortened overall survival, disease specific survival, and recurrence-free survival.

Novel imaging classification system of nodal disease in human papillomavirus-mediated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma prognostic of patient outcomes

Farahna Sabiq et al.

Summary: In HPV-mediated OPC, a subtype of matted nodes consisting of >= 3 abutting lymph nodes with imaging features of surrounding extranodal extension is associated with worse prognosis. Other imaging patterns did not show significant associations with patient outcomes. Overall inter-rater agreement was substantial (kappa = 0.73).

Reduced-Dose Radiation Therapy for HPV-Associated Oropharyngeal Carcinoma (NRG Oncology HN002)

Sue S. Yom et al.

Summary: Reducing radiation treatment dose in patients with good-risk human papillomavirus-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) could potentially improve the quality of life. The study showed that reducing radiation dose could achieve disease control and survival rates equivalent to standard chemoradiation.

Feature-driven local cell graph (FLocK): New computational pathology-based descriptors for prognosis of lung cancer and HPV status of oropharyngeal cancers

Cheng Lu et al.

Summary: FLocK is a novel approach for constructing local cell graphs by considering both spatial proximity and individual nuclei attributes. The method shows promising results in classifying short-term vs. long-term survival among ES-NSCLC patients and predicting HPV status of OP-SCCs.

Computerized tumor multinucleation index (MuNI) is prognostic in p16*oropharyngeal carcinoma

Can F. Koyuncu et al.

Summary: MuNI is a deep-learning-based metric for prognostication in p16* OPSCC, quantifying tumor multinucleation from digitally scanned H & E-stained slides. It independently predicts treatment failure in patients with p16* OPSCC and shows promise as a low-cost digital biomarker test for counseling, treatment, and surveillance.

FDG-PET/CT in the Radiotherapy Treatment Planning of Locally Advanced Anal Cancer: A Monoinstitutional Experience

Clelia Di Carlo et al.

Summary: Radiotherapy with concurrent 5-fluorouracil/mitomycin-C based chemotherapy is the standard treatment for anal cancer. Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) allows precise tumor treatment with reduced damage to surrounding tissues. The study found that 18FDG-PET/CT has a significant impact on staging and target volume delineation in anal cancer patients, leading to clinical stage variation in 14% of cases. More research is needed to further define the role of 18FDG-PET/CT in target volume delineation for anal cancer.

Radiomic Features Associated With HPV Status on Pretreatment Computed Tomography in Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Inform Clinical Prognosis

Bolin Song et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of using CT-based radiomic signatures to predict HPV status and disease-free survival in OPSCC patients. The radiomic signature and corresponding nomogram could serve as useful tools for identifying candidates for therapy deintensification among HPV+ OPSCC patients with further validation.
