Formation of hierarchically ordered structures in conductive polymers to enhance the performances of lithium-ion batteries

Tianyu Zhu et al.

Summary: Electrically conductive polymers with hierarchically ordered structures (HOS) show significant enhancement in charge transport properties and mechanical robustness, making them critical for practical lithium-ion batteries. The conventional design of conductive polymers using bottom-up synthetic approaches and functional group modification has limitations that restrict their scaled synthesis and broad applications. By using simple primary building blocks and thermal processing, we developed conductive polymers with HOS, enabling exceptional cycling performance in lithium-ion batteries.

Removing the Intrinsic NiO Phase and Residual Lithium for High-Performance Nickel-Rich Materials

Feng Wu et al.

Summary: Layered Ni-rich materials used in lithium-ion batteries exhibit high discharge capacities but poor cyclability due to the presence of insulating lithium compounds and the NiO phase on their surface. In this study, LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 material was etched with a small amount of boric acid to investigate the effects of weak acid treatment on the surface phase regulations. The etching process improved the electrochemical performances by reducing the pH, lowering the cation mixing degree, and adjusting the surface to a pure layered structure, leading to enhanced cycling performance and rate capability.

Multielectron reaction of AlCln in borophene for rechargeable aluminum batteries

Lumin Zheng et al.

Summary: Borophene, as a new 2-dimensional material, shows potential in energy storage due to its unique electronic properties. However, the high valence of aluminum limits its utilization in rechargeable aluminum batteries (RABs). The weak adsorption of aluminum on borophene is caused by the repulsion between the lone pair electrons of the 3s orbital and the electron-gaining borophene. By introducing AlCl4-, AlCl2+, and AlCl2+ ions as possible redox carriers, a multielectron reaction and high capacity can be achieved through Cl coordination. This provides new insights into the interplay of AlCln carrier and multielectron reactions in RABs.

Reversible oxide formation during cycling of Si anodes

Tobias Kohler et al.

Summary: Silicon is a promising candidate for battery anodes due to its large theoretical storage capacity, but challenges such as volume expansion and kinetic limitations need to be addressed through nanostructuring. By using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), researchers were able to study the in-situ solid electrolyte interface (SEI) formation on Si films, leading to the discovery of reversible adsorption of Li2O to the SEI layer, which accounts for half of the battery storage. This reversible adsorption is influenced by factors such as cycling window, rate, and anode thickness, indicating a field-driven layer growth mechanism.
