Stabilizing the cycling stability of rechargeable lithium metal batteries with tris(hexafluoroisopropyl)phosphate additive

Huaihu Sun et al.

Summary: A non-flammable triethyl phosphate (TEP)-based electrolyte with tris(hexafluoroisopropyl)phosphate (THFP) as an additive has been developed. THFP helps to form a stable LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, suppress lithium dendrite growth, and reduce electrolyte decomposition. THFP also participates in the formation of a stable electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer for stable cycling of the cathode.

Li2CO3/LiF-Rich Heterostructured Solid Electrolyte Interphase with Superior Lithiophilic and Li+-Transferred Characteristics via Adjusting Electrolyte Additives

Daxiong Wu et al.

Summary: This study successfully realizes a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with the properties of Li2CO3-rich and LiF-rich types by using different fluorine phenylphospines. The SEI formed in the presence of tris(4-fluorophenyl)phosphine (TFPP) has a balanced Li+ transport kinetics, good electron insulator capability, and strong affinity toward Li+. It effectively guarantees fast and uniform Li+ flux while preventing electron penetration, resulting in stable Li plating/stripping and excellent performance of Li-ion batteries.

Enhancing Li+ Transport in NMC811||Graphite Lithium-Ion Batteries at Low temperatures by Using Low-Polarity-Solvent Electrolytes

Bo Nan et al.

Summary: Using low-polarity-solvent electrolytes is proposed as a strategy to reduce the capacity loss of lithium-ion batteries at low temperatures. The weak interactions between solvents and Li+ ions in the electrolyte help to reduce charge transfer resistance and facilitate Li+ transport. Experiments show that this electrolyte enables high capacity retention at low temperatures and stable cycling performance.

Electrolyte design implications of ion-pairing in low-temperature Li metal batteries

John Holoubek et al.

Summary: In this study, we report the development of >4 V Li metal full cell batteries capable of charging and discharging at extremely low temperatures. By introducing cation/anion pairs in the electrolyte, significant improvements in the performance of the batteries were observed. This ion-pairing effect was found to enhance both the cathode and anode, resulting in improved Coulombic efficiencies and oxidative stability of the Li metal.

Interfacial Model Deciphering High-Voltage Electrolytes for High Energy Density, High Safety, and Fast-Charging Lithium-Ion Batteries

Yeguo Zou et al.

Summary: High-voltage lithium-ion batteries using high-voltage electrolytes can improve energy density and power density, but face challenges such as electrolyte decomposition and unclear interfacial side reactions. A new additive-free electrolyte has been developed to address these issues, providing stability at high voltage, lithium-dendrite-free features during fast charging, and superior performance at low temperatures. Additionally, a new solvation structure-related interfacial model has been introduced to help interpret battery performance and guide the design of versatile electrolytes for metal-ion batteries.
