Strong precious metal-metal oxide interaction for oxygen reduction reaction: A strategy for efficient catalyst design

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an electrochemical reaction that reduces dissolved oxygen to OH-/H2O when receiving electrons in an electrolyte. This reaction is crucial for the efficiency of metal-air batteries and fuel cells, with precious metals serving as the dominant catalysts. However, manipulating the electronic structure of precious metals for improved ORR performance is still being explored.

An efficient nickel hydrogen oxidation catalyst for hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells

Weiyan Ni et al.

Summary: This article introduces a nickel-based catalyst for the hydrogen oxidation reaction in hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells and demonstrates its high performance. The catalyst consists of nickel nanoparticles embedded in a nitrogen-doped carbon support, and the electronic interaction between the nanoparticles and the support leads to balanced hydrogen and hydroxide binding energies, resulting in high catalytic activity. Hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells employing this catalyst achieve a peak power density 6.4 times higher than previous best-performing fuel cells.

Dual-Doping and Synergism toward High-Performance Seawater Electrolysis

Jinfa Chang et al.

Summary: Direct seawater electrolysis for hydrogen production is economically appealing yet technically challenging. The iron and phosphor dual-doped nickel selenide nanoporous films were designed as bifunctional catalysts to improve efficiency, selectivity, and stability by enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction selectivity, preventing selenide dissolution, and stimulating active centers for the reaction. The experimental and theoretical analyses provide insights into the roles of dual-dopants in boosting seawater electrolysis, resulting in achieving high current density with OER selectivity and long-term stability.
