Isotopic evidence for an intensified hydrological cycle in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean

Camille Hayatte Akhoudas et al.

Summary: Based on salinity and seawater oxygen isotope observations, the study shows that the atmospheric water cycle has intensified in the Indian Southern Ocean over the past three decades, affecting surface salinity.

Global reorganization of deep-sea circulation and carbon storage after the last ice age

Patrick A. Rafter et al.

Summary: This study provides several benchmarks for circulation and ventilation of the Atlantic, Southern, and Pacific deep-sea since the last ice age using measurements of marine fossil radiocarbon. The findings highlight the significant role of changes in overturning circulation in glacial deep-sea carbon storage and the simultaneous reduction of atmospheric CO2.

A new global surface temperature reconstruction for the Last Glacial Maximum

James D. Annan et al.

Summary: We present a new reconstruction of surface air temperature and sea surface temperature for the Last Glacial Maximum. The method blends model fields and sparse proxy-based point estimates through a data assimilation approach. Our reconstruction shows a slightly colder global annual mean surface air temperature anomaly compared to the previous estimate, but substantially less cold than the recent reconstruction of Tierney et al.

The Ekman Streamfunction and the Eulerian and Residual Overturning Circulations of the Southern Ocean

K. D. Stewart et al.

Summary: The Ekman streamfunction is a wind-derived metric that can infer the Southern Ocean overturning circulations. Strong correlations exist between the Ekman streamfunction and Eulerian and residual SOOCs in certain regions of the Southern Ocean. Regression analysis identifies regions where Ekman streamfunction variability coincides with significant changes in the overturning.
