Hybrid Swarm Intelligence Optimization Methods for Low-Embodied Energy Steel-Concrete Composite Bridges

David Martinez-Munoz et al.

Summary: Bridge optimization is a complex problem with abundant configurations. This research focused on a steel-concrete box-girder optimization problem, using embodied energy and cost as objective functions. The study employed TAMO, CS, and SCA algorithms, and found that SCA achieved comparable results with TAMO in terms of energy function values, while reducing computation time by 25.79%. The analysis revealed that using metaheuristic methodologies to save cost could also reduce energy consumption by 0.584 kW center dot h.

Efficient Initialization Methods for Population-Based Metaheuristic Algorithms: A Comparative Study

Jeffrey O. O. Agushaka et al.

Summary: In this paper, a comprehensive comparison was conducted to evaluate the impact of population size, number of iterations, and different initialization methods on the performance of population-based metaheuristic optimizers. The results indicated that population size and number of iterations affect the algorithm performance, and certain algorithms are sensitive to the initialization schemes. Good population diversity and a suitable number of iterations are likely to lead to optimal solutions.

Modelling uncertainty in sustainable-green integrated reverse logistics network using metaheuristics optimization

Hadi Gholizadeh et al.

Summary: This paper presents a sustainable reverse logistics process model for polystyrene disposable appliances as an MINLP. Three heuristics, namely, cross-entropy, genetic algorithm, and simulated annealing, are employed to generate initial solutions for the MINLP model. Robust optimization is then utilized to solve the resulting problem. The response surface method and the Taguchi method are applied to optimize parameter values and improve algorithm performance. The heuristics are evaluated against the robust optimization method using the best-worst technique, and the model is validated through a real case study.

Optimal design of steel-concrete composite bridge based on a transfer function discrete swarm intelligence algorithm

David Martinez-Munoz et al.

Summary: This paper presents two single objective optimizations of box-girder steel-concrete composite bridges considering cost and CO2 emissions. SAMO2, SCA, and Jaya metaheuristics were applied, and it was observed that SCA showed similar cost values to SAMO2 but with an 18% improvement in computational time and lower objective function result deviation. Adding cells to bridge cross-sections improved section behavior and optimization results.
