A comparative study of Bayesian inverse analyses of spatially varying soil parameters for slope reliability updating

Shui-Hua Jiang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the differences of three Bayesian methods in generating random samples, convergence criterion, model evidence, and estimation of posterior probability of failure in slope reliability updating. It is found that BUS + SS method performs well in both low-dimensional and high-dimensional problems of spatially varying soil parameters, while DREAM((zs)) method is recommended for low-dimensional problems and mBUS + SS method is suitable for high-dimensional problems.

A novel outlier detection method for monitoring data in dam engineering

Chenfei Shao et al.

Summary: In this work, a universal and robust approach, based on the perspective of image processing and artificial intelligence, is proposed for outlier detection in monitoring data. By transforming the monitoring data into a binary image and utilizing techniques such as Gaussian blur and Otsu binarization, isolated-pattern outliers and clustered-pattern outliers can be accurately detected. The results indicate that the proposed method has high detection accuracy and can improve the fitting and predicting ability of the monitoring model.

Bayesian estimation of spatially varying soil parameters with spatiotemporal monitoring data

Hao-Qing Yang et al.

Summary: This study presents an efficient Bayesian method for estimating spatially varied saturated hydraulic conductivity k(s) of unsaturated soil slopes using spatiotemporal monitoring data. The accuracy of Bayesian estimation of spatial variability is improved by using later-stage monitoring data. Decreasing monitoring frequency increases errors and uncertainties in estimated k(s) fields. The estimated method is further validated with a real case study, showing agreement with borehole data, dynamic probe test results, and field monitoring data.

A novel settlement forecasting model for rockfill dams based on physical causes

Chen Chen et al.

Summary: Rockfill dams are commonly built on thick overburden layers in mountainous and valley areas due to their adaptability to complex geological and geographical conditions. The safety of rockfill dams is a global research focus, especially as dam heights increase. This study proposes a novel settlement forecasting model that considers factors such as dam geometric characteristics, different material properties, and external loading conditions for accurate prediction of dam settlement. The model has shown high accuracy in estimating dam deformation, surpassing traditional statistical regression methods.
