Linkages between soil organic matter and magnetic mineral formation in agricultural fields in southeastern Minnesota, USA

Aaron L. Frankl et al.

Summary: The study revealed a relationship between soil magnetic properties and soil organic matter (SOM) in agricultural fields, with strong positive correlations between SOM and specific magnetic properties. The presence of fine-grained magnetite/maghemite in well-drained soils during pedogenesis contributes to the sensitivity of magnetic properties to SOM. Despite differences in management strategies, the correlation persists, supporting the functional link between SOM and soil-formed magnetic minerals.

Identification and quantification of iron oxides by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy with Praying Mantis accessory and integration sphere

Leila Cristina Canton et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify and quantify iron oxides in soils using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and compare the results with X-ray diffraction (XRD). The DRS-PM technique showed promising results for hematite identification and quantification, but overestimated the quantification of goethite. Both DRS accessories were unable to accurately identify and quantify maghemite due to overlapping bands with other minerals.

Soil-landscape relationship in a sandstone-gneiss topolithosequence in the State of Amazonas, Brazil

Julimar da Silva Fonseca et al.

Summary: The study investigated the soil-landscape relationship in a sandstone-gneiss topolithosequence in the State of Amazonas, Brazil, and identified the factors determining soil diversification. Different soil types were found along the topolithosequence, influenced mainly by relief and parent material (sandstone-gneiss).

Magnetic Properties of Plant Ashes and Their Influence on Magnetic Signatures of Fire in Soils

Jessica L. Till et al.

Summary: Fires significantly impact soil properties, with plant ashes being the main source of magnetic enhancement after burning. Mass-normalized saturation magnetization values of burnt plant residues increase with the extent of burning.

Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy for estimating soil organic carbon and make nitrogen recommendations

Nicolas Augusto Rosin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the potential of using spectral techniques to predict soil organic carbon (SOC) and replacing routine chemical methods for SOC measurement without loss of quality, as well as applying it in nitrogen fertilizer recommendation. By developing spectroscopic models for SOC content prediction using a large dataset from soil spectral libraries, it was found that SOC predicted by spectral techniques could effectively replace SOC measured by routine chemical methods and support nitrogen fertilizer recommendation when the conditions and sample characteristics are met.
