Experimental investigation into the synergetic damage of foam-filled and unfilled corrugated core hybrid sandwich panels under combined blast and fragment loading

Pan Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of foam filling on the performance of sandwich panels under combined blast and fragments loading. The experimental results show that increasing the stand-off distance can alleviate perforation failure, increasing the foam filler density can reduce permanent deformation of the panels, and foam filling can relieve debonding failure between the face sheet and core webs.

Elevated shock resistance of all-metallic sandwich beams with honeycomb-supported corrugated cores

Zengshen Yue et al.

Summary: This study proposes lightweight sandwich beams with honeycomb-supported corrugated cores and investigates their dynamic responses and shock resistance. The results show that the hybrid-cored sandwich beam can significantly enhance shock resistance, especially at lower projectile momentum, due to the beneficial interaction effect between honeycomb insertions and folded plates.

Crashworthiness analysis and parametric investigation on kirigami corrugated structures

Zhejian Li et al.

Summary: The crashworthiness of a novel kirigami corrugated unit with various geometric configurations is analyzed in this study. It is found that the kirigami units exhibit significantly improved crashworthiness compared to conventional corrugated units. The inclining angle of the sidewall strongly affects the crashworthiness and should be controlled between 50 and 55 degrees for optimal performance. Careful selection of the top face width and unit length is also important to avoid inefficient energy absorption and fabrication issues.

Origami metamaterial with two-stage programmable compressive strength under quasi-static loading

Zhejian Li et al.

Summary: The proposed origami metamaterial with two-stage programmable compressive strength combines stacked Miura-origami and rhombic honeycomb structure. By adjusting the geometries, the compressive response of each stage can be programmed within a certain range while minimizing crushing resistance fluctuation. The programmability of compressive properties is demonstrated and verified through analytical modeling, numerical analysis, and quasi-static compressive testing.

Dynamic behaviour of graded origami honeycomb

Leo de Waal et al.

Summary: Efforts to improve cellular structures in impact scenarios through the introduction of gradients in mechanical properties have shown promise. Origami techniques offer a convenient way to transform 2D sheets into 3D structures, with the ability to vary the crease pattern for graded topology. Experimental testing validated that origami honeycomb cores can exhibit similar advantages to traditional grading methods under dynamic loading, showing potential as an attractive alternative.

Summary: This study investigates the effective mechanical properties of an orthogonal corrugated sandwich structure through analytical and numerical methods, identifying necessary conditions for geometric design, elastic properties, and collapse surfaces. Finite element simulations validate the analytical model, showing good agreement with numerical results. Additionally, the orthogonal corrugated sandwich structure exhibits better shear performance than the conventional counterpart with appropriate design.

Energy absorption behaviour of an aluminium foam-filled circular-triangular nested tube energy absorber under impact loading

Yonghui Wang et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel aluminium foam-filled circular-triangular nested tube (AFCTNT) energy absorber and investigated its energy absorption behavior under impact loading through experimental and numerical studies. It was found that the deformation modes of the AFCTNT energy absorbers were significantly affected by the volume of the aluminium foam filler, and filling aluminium foam improved the energy absorption performances, including higher energy absorption and efficiency. Both experimental and numerical results indicated that the AFCTNT energy absorber with fully-filled aluminium foam outperformed other configurations due to a more significant interaction effect.
