FEM-Based Shape-Finding and Force-Assessment of Suspension Bridges via Completed Loop Adjustment

Wen-ming Zhang et al.

Summary: In this paper, a shape-finding and force-assessment method for suspension bridges based on loop adjustment is proposed and realized using the finite-element method. The method is verified by its application to two specific suspension bridges, showing good accuracy and effectiveness in meeting design requirements.

Research on the Dynamic Characteristics of Cables Considering the Constraints at Both Ends of the Cables

Danhui Dan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the significance of studying the dynamic characteristics of cables in suspension bridges and arch bridges for their design and operation and maintenance. By deriving the cable frequency equation considering the bending stiffness and introducing the cable boundary condition coefficients and stiffness ratios, the influence of these boundary conditions on the cable modal frequency is studied, and a simple method for determining the boundary conditions of actual bridge cables is discussed. The findings provide a theoretical reference for further analysis of cables, a basis for calculating actual bridge cables, boundary conditions for in-depth study of cable dynamic characteristics, and guidance for cable design, operation, and maintenance.

Experimental and numerical investigations of UHSS wire main cables for suspension bridges

Xiaoming Wang et al.

Summary: With the increasing demand for suspension bridges with large spans and high bearing capacities, the development of new materials to improve the load-carrying efficiency of structures is necessary. A recently developed 1960 MPa grade ultra-high strength steel wire rope strand allows for component miniaturization and meets all specified criteria. Through material and mechanical experiments, as well as numerical simulations, the feasibility and efficiency of this steel wire rope strand in suspension bridges have been demonstrated.

Analytical investigation of the main cable bending stiffness effect on free flexural vibration of suspension bridges with a 3D cable system

Yuan Sun et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a dimensionless continuum model to study the bending stiffness effect of the 3D cable system on suspension bridges' free flexural vibration. The model's precision is validated using the finite element method, and parametric comparative studies are conducted between 3D and 2D cable system suspension bridges. The results show that the bending stiffness effects of the 3D cable system are more evident on the high order modes and anti symmetric modes of suspension bridges.

Qualification of the Ernst formula for modeling the sag effect of super-long stay cables in the long-span railway cable-stayed bridges

Ying Wen et al.

Summary: This study examines the sag effect of long-span railway cable-stayed bridges and proposes an explicit secant modulus formula to assess the reliability of the Ernst formula. A finite element model is used to validate the cable models, and it is found that the Ernst formula is slightly conservative in predicting the sag effect.
