Optical determinations of photophysiology along an ecological gradient in the North Pacific Ocean

James G. Allen et al.

Summary: Photosynthesis is crucial for the cycling of biologically reactive elements in the ocean. Modeling photosynthesis requires knowledge of its response to light, including the maximum rate of photosynthesis per photon absorbed and the irradiance level at which it becomes light-saturated. This study demonstrates a promising framework to capture high-resolution variability in these photosynthetic parameters using a combination of in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence, particulate matter absorption spectra, and photosynthetically active radiation measurements.

Arctic - Atlantic Exchange of the Dissolved Micronutrients Iron, Manganese, Cobalt, Nickel, Copper and Zinc With a Focus on Fram Strait

Stephan Krisch et al.

Summary: The Arctic Ocean serves as a significant source of micronutrients to the Nordic Seas and the North Atlantic Ocean through the Fram Strait. However, limited data on trace elements across the Arctic Ocean gateways makes it difficult to understand the impact of Arctic and North Atlantic exchange on micronutrient availability. Recent research suggests that the Fram Strait is the most important gateway for dissolved micronutrient exchange, driven by the transport of Intermediate and Deep Water. Changes in shelf inputs and sea ice dynamics in the Arctic, particularly in Siberian shelf regions, affect micronutrient availability in the Fram Strait and the high latitude North Atlantic Ocean.

Summary: This research, conducted in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea Area and the Barents Sea, focuses on the conditions and processes of sedimentation, assessment of pollution fluxes, determination of biogeochemical process rates, and regional paleoclimatic reconstructions. The study reveals the consequences of atlantification and the Arctic amplification on the geosystems of the Barents Sea, high-latitude Arctic, and northern North Atlantic in both present time and the Pleistocene and Holocene periods.

Protoplasmic streaming of chloroplasts enables rapid photoacclimation in large diatoms

Vladimir Silkin et al.

Summary: Long-term studies in the NE Black Sea from 2004 to 2020 showed that summer/autumn blooms are dominated by large diatoms with chloroplasts that aggregate in response to changes in light intensity, helping to minimize light absorption and photodamage. The rapid photoacclimation mechanism allows these large diatoms to adjust to varying light conditions, enhancing their growth and competitive success.

A Steady Regime of Volume and Heat Transports in the Eastern Arctic Ocean in the Early 21st Century

A. Pnyushkov et al.

Summary: The mooring observations in the eastern Eurasian Basin of the Arctic Ocean from 2013-2018 showed stable volume and heat transports along-slope in the upper 800m, with no significant temporal shifts within the Atlantic Water (AW) layer. However, long-term reconstructions of AW volume transports showed strong interannual variations but lacking a statistically significant trend. The study also identified a weak positive trend in barotropic AW volume transport over the period of 2003-2014, indicating the importance of barotropic forcing in constraining along-slope transports.
