A new model for the terminal settling velocity of microplastics

Zijian Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, the settling process of microplastic particles in water bodies was investigated, and a new formula for the drag coefficient and settling velocity of microplastic particles was developed. The new formula showed smaller errors and improved accuracy in predicting the motion behavior of microplastics.

Simulated experimental investigation of microplastic weathering in marine environment

Sonali Yadav et al.

Summary: Microplastics can act as a potential vector for various contaminants. The study found that radiation exposure causes surface roughness and cracks on microplastics, increasing the surface area and facilitating pollutant sorption. In addition, radiation-induced morphological changes favor microbial colonization. The study also revealed that the surface of HDPE microplastics is more conducive to biofilm growth compared to LDPE.

Drag model from interface-resolved simulations of particle sedimentation in a periodic domain and vertical turbulent channel flows

Yan Xia et al.

Summary: A drag correlation model for laminar particle-laden flows is established based on interfaced-resolved direct numerical simulations. The model takes into account the effects of density ratio and turbulence by correcting the drag correlation and introducing the relative turbulent kinetic energy.

The occurrence and transport of microplastics: The state of the science

Fritz Petersen et al.

Summary: Microplastic particles have been observed in various environments and pose potential risks to both the environment and human health. Their distribution, transport, and impacts in the lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere are still not fully understood, with particular uncertainty surrounding the effects of MP accumulation in the lithosphere.

Effect of Physical Characteristics and Hydrodynamic Conditions on Transport and Deposition of Microplastics in Riverine Ecosystem

Rakesh Kumar et al.

Summary: Microplastic disposal into riverine ecosystems is a significant ecological hazard originating from land-based sources. This paper provides a detailed review of the physical processes involved in microplastic transport, highlighting the impact of physical characteristics and hydrodynamics on the distribution of microplastics in river ecosystems. The study also emphasizes the importance of empirical transport models in explaining the vertical and horizontal transport of microplastics in rivers.

Evidence of Microplastic Size Impact on Mobility and Transport in the Marine Environment: A Review and Synthesis of Recent Research

Arefeh Shamskhany et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of Marine Microplastics (MPs) on turbulent entrainment, particle settling, and resuspension, as well as the size-selective accumulation of MPs in different marine regions. The challenges in classifying MP size are discussed due to the variability in polymer density and shape, in contrast to mineral sediments. The link between polymer properties and MP shape and size is explored, highlighting the complex relationship between hydrodynamic parameters and MP characteristics.

Settling velocity of irregularly shaped microplastics under steady and dynamic flow conditions

Zhen Wang et al.

Summary: The settling velocity of microplastics in aquatic environments is influenced by factors such as shape irregularity, density, and particle size. Irregular microplastics have a significantly lower settling velocity compared to perfectly spherical microplastics. A model was proposed to predict the correlation between the settling velocity of microplastics and their shape, density, particle size, and water density.

Sinking microplastics in the water column: simulations in the Mediterranean Sea

Rebeca de la Fuente et al.

Summary: Research focused on the vertical dispersion and distribution of negatively buoyant rigid microplastics in the Mediterranean sea, finding the vertical distribution to be almost uniform in most parameter ranges. Transient distributions from different release methods revealed non-Gaussian dispersion characteristics and various diffusion laws.
