A constant parameter time domain model for dynamic modelling of multi-body system with strong hydrodynamic interactions

Meiyan Zou et al.

Summary: This study presents a Constant Parameter Time Domain Model (CPTDM) that combines the damping lid method and state-space model to evaluate the wave-induced dynamics of floating structures. The study finds that a larger damping lid factor helps to decrease the amplitude of the impulse response functions, and the developed model performs well for different wave frequencies and headings.

Higher-order gap resonance between two identical fixed barges: A study on the effect of water depth

Yunfeng Ding et al.

Summary: A nonlinear piston-mode fluid resonance in the gap formed by two identical fixed barges in close proximity is investigated using a two-dimensional fully nonlinear numerical wave tank. The results show that under the action of shallow-water waves, strong higher-order resonances occur in the gap, resulting in significant higher-harmonic responses. Unlike what linear diffraction theory predicts, the gap response behaves differently under long cnoidal waves, and the higher harmonics generally have larger phase differences to the incident-wave components.

Investigation on Effects of Vertical Degree of Freedom on Gap Resonance Between Two Side-by-Side Boxes Under Wave Actions

He Zhi-wei et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates fluid resonance in a narrow gap formed by the parallel arrangement of boxes and focuses on the influence of downstream box motion on resonant behaviors. The results show that the motion of either box leads to a smaller wave height amplification and a larger resonance frequency, as well as a higher reflection coefficient and a lower energy loss coefficient.

Fluid resonance in the narrow gap for a box close to a bottom-mounted wall with permeable bed

Yin Yin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of fluid resonance in a narrow gap between a ship and a wharf on a permeable bed using a two-dimensional viscous numerical model based on the OpenFOAM package. The results show that the influence of the permeable bed is significant in the low-frequency and resonant frequency ranges, leading to a decreased free surface amplitude in the narrow gap. The effect of the permeable bed is increased by a larger bed thickness and smaller bed width. However, with an increase in incident wave amplitude, the influence of the permeable bed becomes weaker.

Study on Transient Gap Resonance with Consideration of the Motion of Floating Body

Jun-liang Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, the transient fluid resonance phenomenon inside a narrow gap between two adjacent boxes is simulated using the open-sourced computational fluid dynamics software, OpenFOAM. It is found that the motion of the weather-side box significantly affects the characteristics of the transient gap resonance, and the relevant physical quantities closely depend on both the spectral peak period and the focused wave amplitude.

Wave actions on side-by-side barges with sloshing effects: fixed-free arrangement

Hui Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interaction between waves and two barges in a side-by-side configuration coupled with liquid sloshing effects in offshore offloading operations. A numerical model based on the boundary element method is developed to analyze the complex wave induced multibody motions and liquid sloshing in internal tanks. Physical experiments are conducted to validate the numerical simulations and provide insights into wave induced motions with liquid sloshing effects, which have implications for vessel operational safety.

Harmonic Analyses of Hydrodynamic Characteristics for Gap Resonance Between Fixed Box and Vertical Wall

He Zhi-wei et al.

Summary: This study used CFD software OpenFOAM(R) to simulate the two-dimensional fluid resonance phenomenon in a narrow gap between two marine structures and investigated the influence of incident wave height and topographic slope on the nonlinear characteristics of hydrodynamic parameters. The research found that the relative importance of high-order components increases gradually with the incident wave height, and the topographic influence depends on the type of parameters and the incident wave height.

Junliang Gao et al.

Summary: This study simulated Bragg reflection and its interactions with the harbor, revealing that Bragg resonant reflection can significantly alleviate harbor resonance. The research also found that the number and amplitude of sinusoidal bars have remarkable influences on the mitigation effect of harbor resonance and on the optimal wavelength of sinusoidal bars that can achieve the best mitigation effect.

Effects of free heave motion on wave resonance inside a narrow gap between two boxes under wave actions

Junliang Gao et al.

Summary: Investigation of fluid resonance inside a narrow gap between two side-by-side boxes using OpenFOAM revealed that the motion of the upstream box affects the hydrodynamic behavior of the resonant fluid, influencing wave height and harmonic components. The heave motion of the upstream box resulted in changes in resonant frequency, wave height, reflection coefficient, and energy loss coefficient.

Summary: This paper investigated the motion response and hydrodynamic characteristics of two rigid-connected boxes freely heaving in waves using two numerical models. The numerical results accurately predicted the motion response and hydrodynamic resonance characteristics of the rigid-connected boxes in waves under different conditions. The study also showed that the hydrodynamic characteristics of the boxes differ significantly under free heave condition and motion constrained condition.

Steady-state harmonic resonance of periodic interfacial waves with free-surface boundary conditions based on the homotopy analysis method

Jiyang Li et al.

Summary: The study reveals the existence of two independent 'external' and 'internal' modes in a two-layer fluid, where exact harmonic resonance occurs when they share the same phase speed. The singularity or small divisor caused by resonant components is successfully eliminated using the homotopy analysis method, leading to convergent series solutions for steady-state interfacial wave groups with harmonic resonance. As the water depth varies, the energy carried by surface waves mirrors that carried by interface waves, showing a transfer of energy from shorter resonant components to longer primary ones as the upper layer depth increases.

Gap resonance from linear to quartic wave excitation and the structure of nonlinear transfer functions

W. Zhao et al.

Summary: The study investigates the resonant response of water waves in a narrow gap between two fixed rectangular boxes, showing that these resonances can be driven through both linear wave excitation and nonlinear processes. It is found that the time histories of gap resonances excited through different nonlinear interactions are remarkably similar. The research suggests that the nonlinear sum-frequency transfer functions for gap resonances depend strongly on the output frequency sum of the interacting linear components, but only weakly on the frequency difference.
