Estimating Ground Elevation in Coastal Dunes from High-Resolution UAV-LIDAR Point Clouds and Photogrammetry

Daniele Pinton et al.

Summary: Coastal dune environments are vital for protecting coastal areas from flooding and erosion. Traditional ground-based survey methods are time-consuming and limit the assessment of small-scale details. High-resolution UAV photogrammetry allows for rapid monitoring and assessment of coastal dune elevations, but cannot map ground elevations beneath vegetation.

A Systematic Review of UAVs for Island Coastal Environment and Risk Monitoring: Towards a Resilience Assessment

Jeremy Jessin et al.

Summary: Island territories and their coastal regions face various natural and human pressures, necessitating improved knowledge of these ecosystems. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have proven to be valuable for coastal monitoring on island territories. This literature review explores the use of UAVs in coastal monitoring, highlighting available platforms, sensors, software, and validation methods. Reviewing existing literature can assist data collectors, researchers, and risk managers in efficiently monitoring vulnerable coastal zones. The review also focuses on operationalizing resilience as a risk management technique, using French Polynesia as a case study.

Applications of Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAV) Technology to Support Integrated Coastal Zone Management and the UN Sustainable Development Goals at the Coast

Sarah Kandrot et al.

Summary: The data and information obtained from low-cost drones can support integrated coastal zone management and contribute to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals at the coast. Applications of UAV technology in coastal management activities include surveillance of illegal fishing, seaweed resource assessments, post-storm damage cost estimation, and documentation of threatened natural and cultural heritage sites.

Review and direct evidence of transgressive aeolian sand sheet and dunefield initiation

Patrick A. Hesp et al.

Summary: This study reviews and discusses multiple hypotheses regarding the initiation of transgressive aeolian sand sheets and dunefields. Direct evidence supporting these hypotheses is largely lacking. However, research in South Australia provides unequivocal evidence that large-scale shoreline and dunefield erosion does lead to the development of a new transgressive aeolian sand sheet. The initiation process occurs at an incredibly rapid rate and may have implications for future sea level rise and climate change.

UAV remote sensing applications in marine monitoring: Knowledge visualization and review

Zongyao Yang et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of information technology and the increasing demand for remote sensing data, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing technology has been widely used in various fields. Compared with traditional marine monitoring technologies, UAV remote sensing has become an important means for marine monitoring due to its flexibility, efficiency, and low cost, while still providing detailed and timely data. This study visualizes the application and research advances of UAV remote sensing in marine monitoring and provides a comprehensive review of its applications in marine management, disaster and environmental monitoring, and wildlife monitoring. The aim is to promote the extensive use of UAV remote sensing in marine research.

Circular Bedforms Due to Pit Foraging of Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus in a Back-Barrier Intertidal Habitat

Paolo Salvador et al.

Summary: The Greater Flamingo is an important ecosystem engineer that rearranges sediment as a result of its filter-feeding behavior. Its populations have significantly increased in recent years, making it one of the most abundant waterbirds in Mediterranean wetlands. Through UAV images, we discovered foraging structures of the Greater Flamingo on a back-barrier washover fan in the Marano and Grado Lagoon.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications in coastal zone management-a review

Richard Adade et al.

Summary: Climate change and intense human activities have increased the vulnerability of coastal areas globally. Researchers have explored the potential of UAVs in coastal resource assessment, with challenges such as imaging water bodies, setting ground control points, and processing large data volumes. Advanced UAV technologies show promise in monitoring coastal environmental changes at high resolution.

Evaluating Short-Term Tidal Flat Evolution Through UAV Surveys: A Case Study in the Po Delta (Italy)

Riccardo Brunetta et al.

Summary: The use of UAVs on wetlands for surveying purposes is becoming common, but implementing them in such complex environments can be challenging. This study in Italy examined morphological changes in a tidal flat and found that increasing Ground Control Point density is the most effective way to enhance resolution in UAV-derived Digital Surface Models (DSMs).
