New insights in the probability distributions of wave-by-wave overtopping volumes at vertical breakwaters

M. Salauddin et al.

Summary: This study provides new insights into the probability distribution of individual wave overtopping volumes at plain vertical seawalls, and analyzes the factors influencing the Weibull b parameter. The results show that the probability distribution of wave-by-wave overtopping volumes follows a 2-parameter Weibull distribution, and the Weibull b values at vertical walls can be reasonably predicted using relative freeboard and relative overtopping rates.

Wave overtopping predictions using an advanced machine learning technique

Joost P. den Bieman et al.

Summary: A new model for predicting mean wave overtopping discharge is presented using the XGBoost machine learning technique, which outperforms other methods for test data sets with normally incident waves. Adding oblique wave cases to the training data significantly improves the performance of the XGBoost model.

Optimizing Wave Overtopping Energy Converters by ANN Modelling: Evaluating the Overtopping Rate Forecasting as the First Step

Jose Manuel Oliver et al.

Summary: Artificial neural networks are powerful elements in analyzing and predicting non-linear processes, especially in the field of prediction. By utilizing statistical techniques and clustering methods, a predictive model can be constructed to forecast overtopping rates for coastal or harbor defense structures, leading to potential conversion into Waves Energy Converters.

Wave Impact Loads on Vertical Seawalls: Effects of the Geometrical Properties of Recurve Retrofitting

Shudi Dong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of geometrical configurations of recurve retrofits on wave impact loads on a vertical seawall. The results show that an increase in recurve height and overhang length leads to an increase in horizontal impact force, as well as significant increases in wave loading for higher recurve retrofits. Additionally, changes in the overturning moment are limited for retrofits with longer overhang length, providing valuable insights for coastal engineers and infrastructure designers.

Prediction of mean wave overtopping at simple sloped breakwaters using kernel-based methods

Shabnam Hosseinzadeh et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the capabilities of two kernel-based methods (GPR and support vector regression) in predicting the mean wave overtopping rate at sloped breakwaters, showing their superiority over artificial neural networks and empirical formulas. By testing different parameter combinations, the optimal input combination was proposed, demonstrating the reliability of kernel-based models in terms of physical representation of the overtopping phenomenon.
