Facile and Scalable Co-deposition of Anti-bacterial Zn-GNS Nanocomposite Coatings for Hospital Facilities: Tribo-Mechanical and Anti-corrosion Properties

Ayush Owhal et al.

Summary: In this study, graphene nanosheets (GNS) were incorporated into a low-cost Zn coating using electrochemical co-deposition (ECD) to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) by serving as a reservoir for bacteria in hospital environments. The effects of different concentrations of GNS in the ECD bath were evaluated for various properties of the coatings, showing improvement in microhardness, anti-bacterial activities, and other features with higher GNS concentration.

Microstructure, mechanical and corrosion properties of hot-pressed graphene nanoplatelets-reinforced Mg matrix nanocomposites for biomedical applications

Mohammad Shahin et al.

Summary: Magnesium (Mg)-based alloys and composites are attracting attention due to their ability to degrade in the body. Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) are considered a promising reinforcement for Mg matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) to enhance mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. This study investigated the effects of adding 0.1-0.3 wt% GNPs on MMNCs, showing improvements in compressive strength and corrosion resistance, with higher GNP content leading to decreased Mg2+ ion release during degradation.

Summary: Biodegradable metals (BMs) are gradually degrading in vivo, with magnesium-based BMs undergoing the most clinical trials, iron-based BMs exhibiting slower degradation rates, and zinc-based BMs considered a new class with intermediate degradation rates. Further research is needed to validate the suitability of zinc-based BMs for biomedical applications.

Biodegradable metal-derived magnesium and sodium enhances bone regeneration by angiogenesis aided osteogenesis and regulated biological apatite formation

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the incorporation of essential element sodium into a biodegradable magnesium alloy through Sn-Na master alloying technique, leading to improved hardness and corrosion resistance. The co-release of magnesium and sodium ions promoted bone regeneration by increasing the expression of specific genes and growth factors related to osteogenesis and angiogenesis. This innovative approach using master alloy showed promise in fabricating biodegradable magnesium alloys with enhanced biological functions.

Co-deposited Zn-Cu/Gr nanocomposite: Corrosion behaviour and in-vitro cytotoxicity assessment

A. Owhal et al.

Summary: Zn-Cu alloys are potential candidates for bioimplant applications due to their moderate corrosion rate and good mechanical properties. By incorporating graphene nanoplatelets, the properties of Zn-Cu alloy can be enhanced, resulting in improved mechanical strength, reduced wear rates and lower corrosion rate. The synthesized Zn-Cu/Gr nanocomposites demonstrate outstanding tribo-mechanical and anti-corrosion properties, showing promise for bioimplant applications.

Bioresorption Control and Biological Response of Magnesium Alloy AZ31 Coated with Poly-β-Hydroxybutyrate

Lu Wang et al.

Summary: The study showed that the PHB coating can diffusively control the degradation rate of the magnesium alloy, improving its biocompatibility. The hemolysis rate of materials coated with PHB was lower than 5%, while compatibility experiments with human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) indicated that the PHB-coated Mg alloy promoted cell proliferation and had no effect on the NO content. Additionally, the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) was enhanced compared with the normal group and bare AZ31 alloy.
