On the design workflow of auxetic metamaterials for structural applications

Matthew Wallbanks et al.

Summary: Auxetic metamaterials exhibit the unexpected behavior of negative Poisson's ratio, expanding transversely when stretched longitudinally, which has applications in energy absorption, sensors, smart filters, vibration isolation, and medical fields. The potential of these structures can be further explored through additive manufacturing. There is currently a lack of guidance on the design of these structures, and this paper provides insights into the state-of-the-art and design approaches.

Tuning of frictional properties in torsional contact by means of disk grading

Gianluca Costagliola et al.

Summary: This paper extends the 2D spring-block model to investigate friction between surfaces in torsional contact. It shows that appropriate grading of the tribological properties of the surface can prevent non-uniform sliding transition due to axisymmetric configuration.

Cylindrical indentation in micropolar elasticity

Th Zisis et al.

Summary: This study investigates the scale dependence of the mechanical properties in indentation experiments and examines the indentation of a rigid cylinder on an elastic half-plane using micropolar elasticity theory. The results demonstrate that the shape of pressure distribution, average pressure, and contact site width beneath the indenter are influenced by the microstructure of the material.

A mathematically defined 3D auxetic metamaterial with tunable mechanical and conduction properties

Xiaoyang Zheng et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new 3D auxetic metamaterial generated from an implicit expression, fabricated using 3D printing, and enhanced with a nickel layer for improved performance. Evaluation of the metamaterial's performance through compression tests and finite element analyses, along with contour maps for guidance in functional applications, were presented. Integration of 3D printing and electroless plating allowed accurate control over the mechanical and conduction properties of the material.

Structured fabrics with tunable mechanical properties

Yifan Wang et al.

Summary: The study presents a structured fabric with tunable bending modulus made up of three-dimensional particles arranged into layered chain mails. When pressure is applied at their boundaries, the particles interlock and jam the chain mails, resulting in a dramatic increase in bending resistance. This property is due to the high tensile resistance of the interlocking particles, providing potential for lightweight, tunable and adaptive fabrics for various applications.

Indentation Modulus, Indentation Work and Creep of Metals and Alloys at the Macro-Scale Level: Experimental Insights into the Use of a Primary Vickers Hardness Standard Machine

Alessandro Schiavi et al.

Summary: This study describes the experimental method and calculation model for determining the indentation moduli, work, and creep of metallic materials using macro-scale forces at room temperature. Various measurements and analysis methods were used to accurately determine these properties, with illustrative tests conducted on metal and alloy samples. Discussions were made regarding the suitability of the proposed methods and analysis.

Large characteristic lengths in 3D chiral elastic metamaterials

Tobias Frenzel et al.

Summary: This study solves three challenges of chiral metamaterials through providing an analytical model, using advanced manufacturing technology, and employing numerical modeling. By designing the chiral characteristic length, samples with sizes exceeding 10(5) micrometers have been successfully manufactured, changing the sample-size dependence.
