Dissimilar welding of high-entropy alloy to Inconel 718 superalloy for structural applications

R. Sokkalingam et al.

Summary: The study involves the fabrication of a dissimilar joint between Al0.1CoCrFeNi-HEA and Inconel 718 using gas tungsten arc welding. Columnar dendritic grains grew epitaxially at the HEA/weld metal interface while non-epitaxial solidification occurred at the weld metal/Inconel 718 interface. The joint showed a joint efficiency of around 88% with a strength of 644 MPa and 21% ductility, demonstrating the feasibility of GTAW in fabricating dissimilar weld joints between HEA and Inconel 718 for structural applications.

J. P. Oliveira et al.

Summary: In this study, laser welding of rolled CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy to 316 stainless steel was conducted, resulting in defect-free joints. The microstructure of the fusion zone was mainly composed of a single FCC phase with increased hardness. The welded joints exhibited good mechanical properties, with fracture occurring at the fusion zone due to the development of a non-favorable large grain size microstructure.

Work hardening in metastable high entropy alloys: a modified five-parameter model

Ravi Sankar Haridas et al.

Summary: The excellent work hardening in TRIP-enabled metastable high entropy alloys is attributed to the phase transformation from austenite to martensite, as well as non-basal slip activity and deformation twinning. A five-parameter empirical model has been developed to replicate the work hardening rate in TRIP HEAs, with easy parameter identification compared to physically based models. The model parameters are correlated with stacking fault energy to predict the tensile stress-strain response of TRIP HEAs.

Excellent ballistic impact resistance of Al0.3CoCrFeNi multi-principal element alloy with unique bimodal microstructure

Saideep Muskeri et al.

Summary: Multi-principal element alloys, particularly the Al0.3CoCrFeNi alloy with bimodal microstructure, exhibit superior mechanical properties and excellent ballistic performance. The alloy's ballistic response is attributed to its unique microstructure, nano-scale L1(2) precipitation, and grain boundary B2 precipitates, which enable deformation mechanisms characterized by extensive dislocation slip and low density of stacking faults at quasistatic and dynamic strain rates, and grain rotation, disordering of the L1(2) phase, and high density of stacking faults at ballistic strain rates.

Summary: The compressive response of a novel Fe38.5Mn20Co20Cr15Si5Cu1.5 high entropy alloy fabricated by laser powder bed fusion was studied at different strain rates. The mechanical response and work hardening rate were found to be correlated with martensitic transformation, phase evolution, and adiabatic heating. Experimental results showed the best correlation with the Khan-Liu model among existing empirical constitutive models.

Laser dissimilar welding of CoCrFeMnNi-high entropy alloy and duplex stainless steel

Nana Kwabena Adomako et al.

Summary: High entropy alloys (HEAs) exhibit superior mechanical properties and have been used in structural materials in nuclear and aerospace applications. A dissimilar joint between CoCrFeMnNi-HEA and duplex stainless steel (DSS) was created through laser beam welding, resulting in a sound joint with FCC phase in the weld metal. Postweld heat treatment (PWHT) showed a decrease in hardness for the weld metal, HEA, and DSS, with HEA experiencing a more significant reduction. Additionally, a strength of 584 MPa with low ductility was achieved after welding, and applying PWHT resulted in increased ductility with only a marginal reduction in strength. Future studies will focus on using laser beam offset welding to improve the mechanical properties of dissimilar joints.

Body-centered-cubic martensite and the role on room-temperature tensile properties in Si-added SiVCrMnFeCo high-entropy alloys

Yong Hee Jo et al.

Summary: A new class of metastable high-entropy alloys that undergo deformation-induced martensitic transformation from FCC to BCC, known as BCC-DIMT, is presented. The addition of Si reduces the intrinsic stacking fault energy in the alloy system, leading to increased transformation rate with higher Si content. The transformation rate is influenced by the phase stability of FCC relative to BCC, with the highest stability observed at 7 at.% Si content.

Modeling the work hardening behavior in metastable high entropy alloys

Ravi Sankar Haridas et al.

Summary: The mechanical response of TRIP-enabled metastable high entropy alloys is characterized by a constant work hardening segment followed by stages of gradual drop in work hardening under uniaxial tension. A four-parameter empirical model based on this work hardening curve has been developed and offers ease of identification from macroscopic mechanical response. Insights can be drawn from the model parameters when fitted to the tensile deformation response of TRIP HEAs, and a method to predict the tensile mechanical response based on correlated parameters with stacking fault energy and microstructure is proposed.
