In vivo biocompatibility and degradability of a Zn-Mg-Fe alloy osteosynthesis system

Xiaoxi Shao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation and biocompatibility of a biodegradable Zn-Mg-Fe alloy in vivo. The results showed that the alloy exhibited good biocompatibility and a uniform degradation rate. Zinc accumulated in adjacent bone tissue but not in other organs. The degradation products included zinc oxide, zinc hydroxide, hydrozincite, and hopeite.

Selective laser melting of an Mg/Metallic Glass hybrid for significantly improving chemical and mechanical performances

X. Y. Yao et al.

Summary: This study used selective laser melting (SLM) to prepare an Fe-based metallic glass surface on a pure Mg substrate, forming a hybrid material. It was found that the corrosion resistance and hardness of the hybrid material were significantly improved. The metallic glass surface retained its amorphous nature and had better wetting property compared to the Mg substrate, leading to good cell adhesion.

Metastable pitting corrosion behavior of laser powder bed fusion produced Ti-6Al-4V in Hank's solution

Yu-Wei Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigated the metastable pitting corrosion behavior of LPBF-produced Ti-6Al-4V in Hank's solution using electrochemical methods. The LPBF-produced sample showed a higher frequency of pit nucleation compared to the annealed counterpart, mainly due to the passive films formed on the LPBF-produced sample having a higher flux of oxygen vacancies, absorbing more aggressive ions and producing more cation vacancies.

Additive manufacturing of metallic lattice structures: Unconstrained design, accurate fabrication, fascinated performances, and challenges

Liang-Yu Chen et al.

Summary: Lattice structures, also known as architected cellular structures, have been widely used in various industrial sectors due to their excellent performance characteristics. Conventional manufacturing methods for lattice structures are often complex and limited, while additive manufacturing technology, based on computer-aided design models, offers a flexible and efficient platform for manufacturing complex components like lattice structures with minimal material waste. This overview highlights the potential of additive manufacturing in providing accurate fabrication for lattice structures with good quality by summarizing the state-of-the-art progress in metallic lattice structures manufacturing.

In vivo degradation and bone formation behaviors of hydroxyapatite-coated Mg alloys in rat femur

Sachiko Hiromoto et al.

Summary: HAp coatings can reduce the corrosion rate of Mg alloys and promote bone formation, but their effectiveness varies for different alloys. The best result was found for WE43, while the effect on pure Mg and MgCa disappeared within 1-2 months, and the effect on EW31 and RE4 was unstable.

Julia Gao et al.

Summary: This study compared the in vitro and in vivo degradation and biocompatibility behaviors of magnesium alloys with calcium phosphate coatings, showing that the CaP coating significantly improved biodegradation behavior and biocompatibility of the Mg alloy. In vitro tests were found to be a quick screening tool for biodegradation rate, with the in vivo degradation rate being slower than in vitro immersion degradation rate.

Summary: This research demonstrates that nanofibers can be utilized as an alternative method for bacterial inactivation, instead of UV and blue irradiation. The use of PLGA nanofiber scaffolds can effectively kill Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria at lower light intensities. The enhanced effect of PLGA scaffolds is attributed to their nanofiber structures, which could pave the way for a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly surface sterilization method.
