Planar thermal Hall effect of topological bosons in the Kitaev magnet α-RuCl3

Peter Czajka et al.

Summary: This study provides detailed measurements of the thermal Hall conductivity k(xy) in alpha-RuCl3. It is found that k(xy) strongly depends on temperature between 0.5 and 10K. The spin excitations evolve into magnon-like modes with a Chern number of approximately 1 at high magnetic fields, instead of showing the expected half-quantization effect of k(xy)/T.

Chiral-phonon-activated spin Seebeck effect

Kyunghoon Kim et al.

Summary: Researchers have discovered that chiral phonons in non-magnetic materials can generate spin currents in response to a thermal gradient, without the need for ferromagnetic contacts. This finding suggests the potential application of chiral phonons in spin caloritronics and offers a new route for spin generation in the absence of magnetic materials.

The helicity of Raman scattered light: principles and applications in two-dimensional materials

Yan Zhao et al.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy is not only a technique for characterizing materials, but also a platform to explore the couplings between electron-photon and electron-phonon. When excited by circularly polarized light, the Raman scattered light can carry a spin angular momentum, providing new possibilities in studying the Raman scattering process. This review explores the helicity of Raman scattered light in 2D materials and its applications, aiming to enhance understanding and inspire further research in this field.

Unconventional interlayer exchange coupling via chiral phonons in synthetic magnetic oxide heterostructures

Seung Gyo Jeong et al.

Summary: Chiral symmetry breaking of phonons plays a crucial role in emergent quantum phenomena due to its strong coupling to spin degree of freedom. In this study, a chiral phonon-mediated interlayer exchange interaction was reported in atomically controlled ferromagnetic metal-nonmagnetic insulator heterostructures, resulting in spin rotation and a spin spiral state. The existence of chiral phonons and their interplay with spins in magnetic materials were confirmed through the phonon Zeeman effect and atomic-scale heterostructure approach.

Giant effective magnetic fields from optically driven chiral phonons in 4f paramagnets

Dominik M. Juraschek et al.

Summary: This paper presents a mechanism by which optically driven chiral phonon modes in rare-earth trihalides generate giant effective magnetic fields acting on the paramagnetic 4f spins. Using CeCl3 as an example, the coherent phonon dynamics in response to an ultrashort terahertz pulse are calculated using a combination of phenomenological modeling and first-principles calculations. It is found that effective magnetic fields of over 100 T can potentially be generated, polarizing the spins for experimentally accessible pulse energies.

Thermal Hall conductivity of electron-doped cuprates

Marie-Eve Boulanger et al.

Summary: Measurements of the thermal Hall conductivity in electron-doped cuprates have shown the presence of large negative thermal Hall conductivity, indicating the chirality of phonons in these materials. The degree of chirality is found to be much larger than in hole-doped cuprates. Factors such as short-range spin correlations may be involved in conferring chirality to phonons in cuprates.

Chiral valley phonons and flat phonon bands in moire materials

Indrajit Maity et al.

Summary: We investigate the chirality of phonon modes in twisted bilayer WSe2 and demonstrate distinct chiral behavior of the K/K' valley phonons for twist angles close to 0 degrees and close to 60 degrees. In particular, multiple chiral nondegenerate K/K' valley phonons are found for twist angles near 60 degrees whereas no nondegenerate chiral modes are found for twist angles close to 0 degrees. We also discover two sets of emergent chiral valley modes that originate from an inversion symmetry breaking at the moire scale and find similar modes in moire patterns of strain-engineered bilayers WSe2 and MoSe2/WSe2 heterostructures.

Half-integer quantized anomalous thermal Hall effect in the Kitaev material candidate α-RuCl3

T. Yokoi et al.

Summary: Recent reports have shown the presence of half-integer thermal quantum Hall conductance in the two-dimensional honeycomb material alpha-RuCl3, even in magnetic fields without out-of-plane components. The measured field-angular variation of the quantized thermal Hall conductance in alpha-RuCl3 has the same sign structure as the topological Chern number of the pure Kitaev spin liquid, indicating that the non-Abelian topological order persists in the presence of non-Kitaev interactions.

Summary: Honeycomb and kagome lattices exhibit extraordinary electronic properties, especially in combination as observed in CoSn-like compounds, leading to the emergence of chiral phonon modes. The study of seven CoSn-like compounds demonstrates that the properties of chiral phonons do not depend on atomic mass ratio or intrinsic magnetic order, and the restoration of chiral phonons of d-block atoms is possible by removing inversion symmetry.
