Status of disease prevalence, drugs and antibiotics usage in pond-based aquaculture at Narsingdi district, Bangladesh: A major public health concern and strategic appraisal for mitigation

Md. Abu Kawsar et al.

Summary: This research investigates the disease prevalence and usage of aqua drugs in aquaculture operations in the Narsingdi region of Bangladesh. It reveals that mixed cultures of carp, tilapia, and pangas are commonly practiced, and diseases such as epizootic ulcerative syndrome and saprolegniasis are prevalent in the area. The study also highlights farmers' lack of knowledge about the proper use of aqua chemicals and the potential health risks associated with their misuse.

Relationships between pond water and tilapia skin microbiomes in aquaculture ponds in Malawi

Jamie McMurtrie et al.

Summary: The intensification of fish farming practices increases the risk of disease outbreaks and crop losses. The microbial communities on fish skin play an important role in maintaining fish health and resistance against disease. In this study, the microbial communities associated with tilapia fish farming in Malawi were characterized. Environmental factors strongly influenced the prokaryotic and microeukaryotic community structures. The fish microbiota showed a greater buffering capacity against environmental influences.

Summary: This study applies the Driver Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) conceptual framework to analyze antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in rural aquaculture environments in Bangladesh. The study demonstrates how the DPSIR framework helps identify the complex social drivers of AMR and illustrates the connectivity between AMR and other sustainable development issues.

Screening of antibiotic residue in transported live fish and water collected from different fish markets in Mymensingh district of Bangladesh

Md Mehedi Hasan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the persistence of oxytetracycline residue in fish species and transport water from local fish markets in the Mymensingh region. The results showed that the overall percentage of antibiotic residue positive in fish samples was 5.42%, and in water samples, it was 8.33%. The concentrations of oxytetracycline in fish samples were higher during the summer season compared to the winter season. However, all samples had concentrations below the maximum residue limits set by the European Commission.

CheckV assesses the quality and completeness of metagenome-assembled viral genomes

Stephen Nayfach et al.

Summary: CheckV is an automated pipeline for identifying closed viral genomes, estimating completeness of genome fragments, and removing host-related regions. By comparing sequences with a large database of complete viral genomes, CheckV assesses the quality of viral genomes assembled from metagenome data. Removing host contamination improves the accurate identification of auxiliary metabolic genes and interpretation of viral-encoded functions.

Evaluation of Metagenomic-Enabled Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance at a Conventional Wastewater Treatment Plant

Haniyyah J. Majeed et al.

Summary: This study evaluated antibiotic resistance patterns at different stages of a conventional WWTP, finding that total ARG abundance decreased by approximately 50% from influent to effluent. While 90% of ARGs in the effluent were also detected in influent, taxonomic linkage patterns in effluent were more similar to regional clinical data than patterns in influent. Analysis of resistomes across sampling events helped identify candidate ARGs for surveillance and provided metrics for predicting relative ARG mobility and likelihood of being carried by pathogens.

Metagenome-Wide Analysis of Rural and Urban Surface Waters and Sediments in Bangladesh Identifies Human Waste as a Driver of Antibiotic Resistance

Ross Stuart McInnes et al.

Summary: The study in Bangladesh found that ESBL-producing coliforms were more prevalent in urban surface waters, while sediment samples were dominated by Proteobacteria and water samples by Cyanobacteria. Antibiotic resistance genes were detected in all samples but varied significantly between sites, with the highest levels found in urban surface water samples. The abundance of antibiotic resistance genes was strongly correlated with bacteria originating from the human gut, indicating the role of untreated sewage in driving environmental antibiotic resistance spread in highly urbanized settings.
