Chronic impact of exposure to low dissolved oxygen on the physiology of Dicentrarchus labrax and Sparus aurata and its effects on the acute stress response

Athanasios Samaras et al.

Summary: Dissolved oxygen saturation in water affects the performance and welfare of fish. This study examined the effects of different levels of dissolved oxygen saturation on European sea bass and gilthead seabream. The results showed that both species had reduced performance and aerobic capacity at lower levels of dissolved oxygen saturation. Moreover, osmoregulatory imbalance was observed in both species at the lowest level of dissolved oxygen.

M. Chataigner et al.

Summary: This study aims to determine the combined effect of n-3 LC-PUFAs and low molecular weight peptides on cognitive functions and their mechanism of action. The researchers found that a dietary supplementation with a fish hydrolysate containing n-3 LC-PUFAs and low molecular weight peptides prevented age-related spatial short-term memory deficits and modulated navigation strategies during spatial learning. Additionally, the fish hydrolysate displayed anxiolytic activities and modulated the hypothalamic stress response, indicating its potential role in preventing age-related cognitive decline.

Summary: In intensive farming systems, incorporating health-promoting compounds like proteins, hydrolysates, and bioactive peptides into fish feed is crucial for enhancing defense mechanisms, growth, and immune functions of fish. Fish processing waste can be converted into valuable products such as fish protein hydrolysate (FPH), which is rich in nutrients and antioxidants, improving fish growth, immune response, and disease resistance. The production of targeted FPH with superior functionalities has high demand in aquafeed supplements, showing potential for sustainable aquaculture development.
