High-yield and high-angular-fluence neutron generation from deuterons accelerated by laser-driven collisionless shock

C. -K. Huang et al.

Summary: In this paper, a compact high-yield and high-angular-fluence neutron source is studied for high-energy neutron applications. The design shows potential for increasing the neutron yield and angular fluence of laser-driven neutron sources, which can be applied in fundamental neutron science, high precision radiography, and other global security applications.

Laser energy absorption and x-ray generation in nanowire arrays irradiated by relativistically intense ultra-high contrast femtosecond laser pulses

E. Eftekhari-Zadeh et al.

Summary: In this study, the absorption of laser energy in bulk and different morphology nanowire arrays interacting with relativistically intense, ultra-high temporal contrast femtosecond laser pulses was experimentally measured. The results showed an almost twofold enhancement of absorption in nanowire arrays compared to bulk samples, and this enhanced absorption was confirmed by high-resolution x-ray emission spectroscopy.

10 PW peak power femtosecond laser pulses at ELI-NP

Christophe Radier et al.

Summary: We present the generation and delivery of 10.2 PW peak power laser pulses using the High Power Laser System at the Extreme Laser Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics facility. This work demonstrates, to the best of our knowledge, the compression and propagation of full energy, full aperture, laser pulses reaching a power level of more than 10 PW.

High-energy-density plasma in femtosecond-laser-irradiated nanowire-array targets for nuclear reactions

Defeng Kong et al.

Summary: This study numerically and experimentally investigated high-energy-density plasmas produced by joule-class femtosecond laser-irradiated nanowire array targets. The results showed that the ion energy densities from nanowire array targets were an order of magnitude higher than those from planar targets, with a larger plasma volume. At optimal target parameters, 8% of the laser energy could be converted to confined protons, resulting in ion energy densities at the GJ/cm(3) level. Experimental measurements confirmed the simulation results and confirmed the findings through neutron measurements.

Recent progress of laboratory astrophysics with intense lasers

Hideaki Takabe et al.

Summary: Since the birth of lasers in 1960 by T.H. Maiman, rapid progress in high-power lasers has mainly been used to study the scientific feasibility of laser fusion. Intense lasers for inertial confinement fusion have attracted attention as a new future energy source, leading to research on hydrodynamic instability and turbulent mixing of compressible fluids. Collaboration between laser plasma researchers and astrophysicists has led to the proposal and promotion of laboratory astrophysics with intense lasers, which has diversified to study various nonlinear physics of collisionless plasmas in the last decade. A review of recent papers and a focus on modeling cosmic-ray acceleration with lasers hint at the future main topic in laboratory astrophysics research.
