Optimization of ultrasound-assisted extraction of bitter compounds and polyphenols from willow gentian underground parts

Milos Jovanovic et al.

Summary: Willow gentian is a medicinal plant used in folk medicine for treating gastrointestinal and liver diseases. The study optimized the ultrasound-assisted extraction of bioactive compounds from its underground parts, using response surface methodology and artificial neural network modeling to achieve high extraction yields. The developed extraction model can be used for further separation, purification, and bioactivity studies of the selected compounds.

Plant Extracts Rich in Polyphenols as Potent Modulators in the Growth of Probiotic and Pathogenic Intestinal Microorganisms

Milica Milutinovic et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of polyphenol-rich extracts from four medicinal herbs on the growth of probiotic and pathogenic microbes. The results demonstrated that certain extracts, particularly yarrow extract, stimulated the growth of probiotic yeast significantly. This suggests that plant polyphenol-rich extracts may play a role in modulating the balance of intestinal microbiota and potentially benefit conditions associated with fungal dysbiosis.

Cytinus hypocistis (L.) L.: Optimised heat/ultrasound-assisted extraction of tannins by response surface methodology

Ana Rita Silva et al.

Summary: The study focused on extracting tannins from Cytinus hypocistis and optimized the extraction methods using Response Surface Methodology for both Heat-Assisted and Ultrasound-Assisted techniques. The results indicated that a high percentage of ethanol is crucial for increasing tannin content. The optimal global processing conditions were determined based on the polynomial models.
