A preliminary investigation of the feeding behaviour of dairy goat kids reared away from their dams on a computerised ad libitum milk feeding system

H. M. Vickery et al.

Summary: Most commercial dairy goat farmers use ad libitum milk feeding set-ups to rear goat kids. However, detailed information on how kids use these systems is lacking. This study aimed to describe and characterize the feeding behavior of dairy breed goat kids using a computerized milk feeder. The results showed that milk consumption and milk intake per meal increased with age, and solid feed and water intakes were positively correlated with age. The study also found that most milk intake occurred during meals with more than two kids.

Rearing goat kids away from their dams 1. A survey to understand rearing methods

H. M. Vickery et al.

Summary: Despite a large global goat population, there is limited knowledge about milk feeding and weaning methods for artificially reared kids. A recall-based survey collected responses from 16 countries, revealing that bottle feeding and ad libitum feeding are common milk feeding methods. The study also found variations in weaning ages and weights across countries, with different feeding systems associated with different weaning methods. The findings highlight the need for welfare-focused research to identify and promote best practices for artificially reared kids.

Does coping style affect behavioral responses and growth performance of lambs weaned at different ages?

Cihan Cakmakci et al.

Summary: The study showed that coping style (CS) did not have a significant effect on blood parameters, but had a significant effect on live weight and average daily weight gain. Reactive lambs generally had higher weight and weight gain compared to proactive lambs. Weaning age had significant effects on weight and behavior, with lambs weaned at 75 days showing better performance in weight and behavior.

Maternal deprivation affects goat kids' stress coping behaviour

Claire Toinon et al.

Summary: The study found that artificial rearing due to maternal deprivation early in life affects stress coping abilities and behavioral responses in goat kids, making them more active in stressful situations. Compared to dam-reared kids, artificially-reared kids are more likely to approach unfamiliar individuals and new objects.

A survey of dairy goat kid-rearing practices on Canadian farms and their associations with self-reported farm performance

S. Belanger-Naud et al.

Summary: This survey study in Canadian commercial dairy goat farms found a wide variation in kid-rearing practices and farm performance, with colostrum and milk feeding management being closely associated with performance indicators. The study successfully grouped farms into three distinct categories (production-focused, longevity-focused, and low performance) based on self-reported performance levels, indicating different management styles on the farms. By targeting rearing practices associated with higher performance, advisory services could help improve management practices on Canadian dairy goat farms.

Health and Welfare Survey of 30 Dairy Goat Farms in the Midwestern United States

Melissa N. Hempstead et al.

Summary: There is a rapid expansion of dairy goat farming in the Midwestern United States, but limited information is available for producers in this region. This study surveyed 30 dairy goat farms to gain insight into husbandry practices related to health, welfare, and production and to identify areas for future research. The study highlighted the need for research in areas such as pain relief for husbandry practices, education and training programs, early kid management, and hoof trimming.
