Minocycline Prevents the Development of Key Features of Inflammation and Pain in DSS-induced Colitis in Mice

Teresa Vezza et al.

Summary: Abdominal pain is a common symptom in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and has a significant impact on their quality of life. Minocycline, a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic, has been identified as a potential therapy for managing visceral pain in IBD-induced colitis in mice.

A model-specific simplification of the Mouse Grimace Scale based on the pain response of intraperitoneal CCl4 injections

Lisa Ernst et al.

Summary: Despite its long establishment and wide application, the Mouse Grimace Scale is underused in chronic experiments for acute pain detection. This study evaluated the relative importance of five composite MGS criteria and found that orbital tightening was the most important criterion. The results indicated that the pain caused by i.p. injections was dependent on the substance used, and no significant cumulative or habituation effect occurred due to the intervention.

Grimace scale, burrowing, and nest building for the assessment of post-surgical pain in mice and rats-A systematic review

Katharina Aulehner et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzes the current evidence base of behavioral parameters such as grimace scale, burrowing, and nest building for assessing post-surgical pain in mice and rats. The findings suggest that grimace scale is the most commonly used parameter for evaluating post-surgical pain in rodents. However, there are still gaps in knowledge regarding the application of these parameters in different strains, age levels, and surgical procedures.

Regulation of Citrobacter rodentium colonization: immune and microbiota interactions

Gustavo Caballero-Flores et al.

Summary: Citrobacter rodentium is a mouse-specific pathogen used as a model for Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli infection. It overcomes competition by gut microbiota, injects effector proteins using T3SS, and induces metabolic and inflammatory conditions for colonization. The pathogen also elicits coordinated immune responses in the gut to regulate colonization and eradication.

Methods Used and Application of the Mouse Grimace Scale in Biomedical Research 10 Years on: A Scoping Review

Alexandra L. Whittaker et al.

Summary: The Mouse Grimace Scale (MGS) is a tool developed for pain assessment in laboratory mice, focusing on measuring spontaneous or non-evoked pain. A comprehensive review of 48 articles showed that while MGS is mainly used for acute pain evaluation, it has utility across various fields and animal models. Further research is needed in the use of real-time methods for pain assessment using MGS.
