Review: Sperm cryopreservation in wild small ruminants: morphometric, endocrine and molecular basis of cryoresistance

J. Santiago-Moreno et al.

Summary: Reproductive technologies can help protect wild ruminant species from extinction and increase the number of animals. Efforts have focused on preserving sperm, oocytes, and embryos. Cryopreservation of sperm is the most commonly used and cheapest method for germplasm storage. New reproductive biotechnologies, such as ultra-rapid freezing techniques, have been developed. However, the success of artificial insemination using frozen-thawed sperm is not always satisfactory in wild small ruminants. Epididymal sperm shows higher cryoresistance than ejaculated sperm, and the seasonal variation in testosterone and prolactin levels is involved in sperm cryoresistance.

Expression of Aquaglyceroporins in Spermatozoa from Wild Ruminants Is Influenced by Photoperiod and Thyroxine Concentrations

Julian Santiago-Moreno et al.

Summary: This study identified the presence of AQPs in frozen-thawed sperm of wild ruminants and investigated the influence of the interaction between photoperiod and thyroxine on AQP expression and testosterone secretion. The results showed that thyroxine and melatonin treatments can significantly alter sperm viability and the distribution of AQPs. Furthermore, the study suggested that the impact of photoperiod/melatonin on AQP expression might be indirectly exerted through changes in testosterone concentration.

The Cryopreserved Sperm Traits of Various Ram Breeds: Towards Biodiversity Conservation

Jakub Vozaf et al.

Summary: Biodiversity protection is a vital challenge, and cryopreservation of sperm is an effective tool for animal genetic resource conservation. This study compares the quality parameters of cryopreserved sperm among three different Slovak sheep breeds. The study finds that the selected cryopreservation protocol is suitable for all three breeds and can greatly benefit biodiversity protection.

Relevance of Aquaporins for Gamete Function and Cryopreservation

Ariadna Delgado-Bermudez et al.

Summary: The interaction between cells and the extracellular medium is crucial for water movement, which is facilitated by Aquaporins (AQPs). AQPs play important roles in sperm and oocytes during fertilization, as well as in the cryopreservation process. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms of AQPs in mammalian sperm and to identify the specific AQPs present in oocytes from different species.

Sperm freezability is neither associated with the expression of aquaporin 3 nor sperm head dimensions in dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius)

Emma O'Brien et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence and distribution of aquaglyceroporin 3 (AQP-3) in dromedary camel sperm, as well as its role in cryoinjury. The results showed that AQP-3 expression was not associated with the individual sperm response to freezing-thawing process. Additionally, sperm head morphometry was not a reliable predictor of cryosurvival.
