Computed tomographic geometrical analysis of surgical treatments for equine recurrent laryngeal neuropathy

Michelle L. Tucker et al.

Summary: This study characterized the 3-D geometry of the equine larynx under steady-state airflow conditions and investigated the effects of laryngeal hemiplegia and four surgical interventions. The relationship between airflow geometry and impedance for each surgical procedure was established using fluid mechanic principles. The results showed that incident angle, entrance coefficient, outlet coefficient, friction coefficient, and surgical procedure were significantly associated with upper airway impedance.

Influence of unilateral and bilateral vocal cordectomy on airflow across cadaveric equine larynges at different Rakestraw grades of arytenoid abduction

Natasha E. Lean et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effect of vocal cordectomy on airflow across equine larynges at different levels of arytenoid abduction using a unidirectional airflow model. The results showed that vocal cordectomy improved Translaryngeal Impedance (TLI) in larynges with arytenoid position approximating Rakestraw grade B, but had no effect when the position approximated Rakestraw grade A. Surgeons should consider the degree of arytenoid abduction before performing a vocal cordectomy.

The effect of repeated freezing and thawing on the suture pull-out strength in equine arytenoid and cricoid cartilages

Sarah M. Gray et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of repeated freezing and thawing on the suture pull-out strength in the arytenoid and cricoid cartilages during laryngoplasty procedure. The results indicated that repeated freezing and thawing did not affect the suture pull-out strength. This finding is clinically significant for the experimental evaluation of laryngeal specimens in laryngoplasty procedures.

Evaluation of the airway mechanics of modified toggle laryngoplasty constructs using a vacuum chamber airflow model

Sarah M. Gray et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the airway mechanics of different arytenoid cartilage lateralization (LP) constructs and found that modified toggle and standard LP constructs had comparable airway mechanics in an ex-vivo model. Further investigation is needed to determine the extent to which the modified toggle LP technique restores normal airway function in horses with recurrent laryngeal neuropathy.

Computational Analysis of Airflow in Upper Airway under Light and Heavy Breathing Conditions for a Realistic Patient Having Obstructive Sleep Apnea

W. M. Faizal et al.

Summary: This study investigates the airflow characteristics of the upper airway in obstructive sleep apnea patients under light and heavy breathing conditions using Turbulent Kinetic Energy. Results show an increase in airflow parameters and turbulent conditions in the upper airway during heavy breathing, indicating severity of the disorder. Visualizing airflow concentration mechanisms during different breathing conditions is crucial for understanding and treating obstructive sleep apnea.
