Metabolic Predictors of Equine Performance in Endurance Racing

Anna Halama et al.

Summary: The study provides an in-depth characterization of metabolic alterations in horses during endurance races. Significant changes were observed in metabolites involved in lipids and amino acid metabolism before and after the race, as well as metabolic differences between animals who completed the race and those who did not even before the race starts. Six metabolite predictors were identified as potential indicators of animal performance in endurance competition, with a high accuracy rate of 0.92.

Type, prevalence, and risk factors for the development of orthopedic injuries in endurance horses during training and competition

Angelo Paris et al.

Summary: A review of medical records of 235 endurance horses revealed that over 76% of the horses had suffered 351 orthopedic injuries affecting various anatomical locations. Factors such as age, observation time, conformation fault, and amateur status were found to be significant in the development of orthopedic injuries. Clinical and diagnostic exams should focus on the metacarpophalangeal joints, proximal portion of the metacarpal area, and foot in endurance horses.

Bilirubin: The toxic mechanisms of an antioxidant molecule

Constanza P. Soto Conti

Summary: Hyperbilirubinemia is a common reason for consultation and hospitalization in neonates, requiring timely treatment to prevent neurotoxicity and oxidative stress. Bilirubin itself acts as a potent antioxidant, and understanding the mechanisms of its cell damage can facilitate more accurate phototherapy treatment.
