Choriocapillaris perfusion assessed using swept source optical coherence tomographic angiography and the severity of diabetic retinopathy

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between choriocapillaris blood perfusion and the severity of diabetic retinopathy (DR) using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA). The results showed that FD density, number, and size were independently correlated with the severity of DR. CC perfusion metrics may serve as a sensitive biomarker for evaluating DR changes.

Combining retinal and choroidal microvascular metrics improves discriminative power for diabetic retinopathy

Bingyao Tan et al.

Summary: Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) parameters from both the retinal and choroidal microvasculature can be used to detect the presence and severity of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Choriocapillaris parameters show better discrimination between non-diabetic and diabetic without DR groups. Evaluating both retinal and choroidal microvasculature significantly improves the detection of diabetic retinopathy.

Multimodal imaging analysis for the impact of retinal peripheral lesions on central neurovascular structure and retinal function in type 2 diabetes with diabetic retinopathy

Summary: This study suggests that diabetic eyes with peripheral lesions (PLs) have worse retinal function. These findings challenge the conventional ETDRS protocols that ignore the importance of the peripheral retina in determining diabetic retinopathy (DR) severity. Combining ultrawide field imaging with the RETeval system may be useful in detecting more retinal abnormalities in DR management.

Longitudinal analysis of microvascular perfusion and neurodegenerative changes in early type 2 diabetic retinal disease

Julia Aschauer et al.

Summary: This study aimed to prospectively monitor subclinical changes in capillary perfusion and retinal layer thickness in patients with type 2 diabetes and early diabetic retinal disease over 2 years. The results showed that subclinical signs of microangiopathy and neurodegeneration appear in parallel and are highly progressive even in the earliest stages of diabetic retinal disease.

Wide-field swept-source OCTA in the assessment of retinal microvasculature in early-stage diabetic retinopathy

Xiang-ning Wang et al.

Summary: The study used wide-field swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography to quantitatively analyze retinal microvasculature in patients with early-stage diabetic retinopathy. The results showed that peripheral capillary perfusion was significantly decreased in eyes with early-stage DR compared to controls, especially in certain sectors. The reduction in perfusion area and vessel density was uneven in wide-field scans.

Summary: This study examined the differences in subfoveal choroidal thickness and choroidal vascularity index in diabetic eyes with and without retinopathy. The results showed that patients with diabetic retinopathy had thicker SFCT and lower CVI values, suggesting these parameters could be useful in monitoring the onset of retinopathy.

Ultra-widefield color fundus photography combined with high-speed ultra-widefield swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography for non-invasive detection of lesions in diabetic retinopathy

Summary: This study aimed to compare the detection rate of DR lesions and the agreement of DR severity grading using UWF CFP combined with UWF SS-OCTA or FFA. The results showed good agreement between the two combination methods in detecting DR lesions and determining the severity of DR.

Comparison of widefield swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography with ultra-widefield colour fundus photography and fluorescein angiography for detection of lesions in diabetic retinopathy

Summary: This study compared the performance of WF SS-OCTA with UWF CFP and UWF FA in detecting diabetic retinopathy lesions. The results showed that WF SS-OCTA outperformed UWF CFP in detecting IRMAs and NVE/NVD, and had comparable detection rates with UWF FA images for MAs, IRMAs, NVE/NVD, and NPAs. Additionally, combining WF SS-OCTA with UWF CFP showed identical detection rates with UWF FA for MAs, IRMAs, NVE/NVD, and NPAs, suggesting a less invasive alternative for DR diagnosis.

Summary: The study evaluated microvascular impairments in the eyes of diabetic patients with no diabetic retinopathy using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). The results showed that retinal microvascular impairments might have occurred before clinically visible diabetic retinopathy and could be detected early by OCTA, but the manifestations could be inconsistent according to the types of diabetes mellitus.
