Geospatial Reach of the Maryland COVID-19 School Meals Response: Spring 2020

Summary: This study examined the characteristics of pandemic meal site locations and meals served per site in Maryland during the spring of 2020. The results showed that areas with more meal sites were urban, food deserts, and had higher percentages of children in poverty. Geospatial approaches could optimize site locations to maximize reach to populations in need.

Summary: This study evaluates the coverage, benefits received, and implementation costs of the P-EBT and grab-and-go school meal programs during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study finds that the P-EBT program reached 89% of eligible children, while the grab-and-go meals program reached 27% of eligible children. Both programs provided food support for children, but the P-EBT program had lower costs per meal, while the grab-and-go meals program had higher benefit amounts.

Food Insecurity in Households with Children Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic: Evidence from the Household Pulse Survey

Summary: This study, based on a nationally representative sample of households with children, found that most sociodemographic factors contributing to severe household food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic were similar to those before the pandemic. However, having children enrolled in schools did not protect families from food insecurity during COVID-19, and relatively disadvantaged households transitioned into food insecurity.

Dedication, innovation, and collaboration: A mixed-methods analysis of school meals in Connecticut during COVID-19

Summary: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, school buildings across the U.S. closed and emergency school meal programs were established. Despite lower participation rates in the spring of 2020 compared to before the pandemic, April and May saw participation rates approaching those of free and reduced-price meals a year earlier. Four key action themes emerged from interviews, with participants seeing the event as an opportunity to improve the perception of school meals.
