Performance of four commercial real-time PCR assays for the detection of bacterial enteric pathogens in clinical samples

Byron M. Berenger et al.

Summary: This study compared the ability of four commercially available RT-PCR tests to detect five major bacterial enteric pathogens. The results showed high concordance rates between RT-PCR and culture for most pathogens, except for Yersinia. Only one of the assays could detect a specific subtype, while none could detect two specific bacterial species. Depending on the prevalence of these pathogens, culture methods may still be critical for their detection.
