Correlation of clinical characteristics between patients with seasonal influenza and patients infected by the wild type or delta variant of SARS-CoV-2

Jianguo Zhang et al.

Summary: By comparing the clinical characteristics of patients infected with different variants of COVID-19 and seasonal influenza, the study found significant differences in age, gender ratio, and duration from disease onset to hospitalization between COVID-19 patients and those with seasonal influenza. Individual treatment improved hematological parameters in both COVID-19 and influenza patients, but compromised biomarkers at discharge indicated persistent renal or myocardial impairment.

The disease burden of influenza beyond respiratory illness

Alejandro E. Macias et al.

Summary: Influenza, primarily known as a respiratory infection, also has broader consequences such as cardiovascular events, exacerbations of chronic illnesses, increased susceptibility to secondary infections, functional decline, and poor pregnancy outcomes. Understanding these broader consequences is crucial for assessing the full burden of influenza and the value of preventive measures among different populations.

Impact of Coinfection With SARS-CoV-2 and Influenza on Disease Severity: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Zhou Guan et al.

Summary: The study found that coinfection with SARS-CoV-2 and influenza did not affect overall mortality. However, there was a lower risk for critical outcomes in coinfection patients, and different associations were found in studies from different regions and specific laboratory indexes. Further research on influenza strains and the order of infection is needed.

Influenza vaccination hesitancy in large urban centers in South America. Qualitative analysis of confidence, complacency and convenience across risk groups

Miguel Angel Gonzalez-Block et al.

Summary: This study investigates the determinants of influenza vaccination hesitancy in middle-class, urban risk group populations in Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, countries with varying vaccination coverage. It finds that confidence, complacency, and convenience play different roles in shaping vaccination attitudes among different risk groups, and information and communication strategies need to be tailored accordingly. Confidence and complacency should be addressed together in order to effectively increase vaccination rates among priority groups.

Older adults' vaccine hesitancy: Psychosocial factors associated with influenza, pneumococcal, and shingles vaccine uptake

Louise A. Brown Nicholls et al.

Summary: The study found that older adults had higher awareness and uptake of the influenza vaccine compared to the pneumococcal and shingles vaccines. A lower sense of collective responsibility independently predicted lack of uptake of all three vaccines. Interventions should be vaccine-specific and emphasize disease risks and vaccine benefits to increase vaccination uptake among older adults.
