Global inequalities in the double burden of malnutrition and associations with globalisation: a multilevel analysis of Demographic and Health Surveys from 55 low-income and middle-income countries, 1992-2018

Paraskevi Seferidi et al.

Summary: This study examines global inequalities in double burden of malnutrition (DBM) at the household level, focusing on the association with economic, social, and political globalisation. The findings suggest that DBM is more prevalent in richer households in poorer countries and poorer households in richer countries. Economic globalisation is associated with a higher likelihood of DBM among the poorest households, while social globalisation is independently linked to higher odds of DBM. No associations were found between political globalisation and DBM.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of adolescent active travel to school (ATS) in 31 countries and territories in Asia. The overall prevalence of ATS was found to be 55%, with variations by age group, sex, and BMI category. Older adolescents, males, and those with underweight or normal BMI were more likely to actively travel to school, while females and those with overweight or obesity were less likely. The reasons for these differences remain unknown.

Alarming level of severe acute malnutrition in Indian districts

Sabu Kochupurackal Ulahannan et al.

Summary: Severe acute malnutrition in India has continued to increase over the past two decades despite favorable national-level economic growth. The latest survey results indicate an alarming rise in malnutrition, particularly in hotspot districts. Surprisingly, even districts outside of hotspots and previously known for low malnutrition rates have shown an increase in severe acute malnutrition. This data does not yet reflect the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on marginalized Indian households. Urgent policy and programmatic actions are needed to address this emerging trend and strengthen the existing healthcare system for children in India.

Double burden of malnutrition in Nepal: A trend analysis of protein-energy malnutrition and High Body Mass Index using the data from Global Burden of Disease 2010-2019

Priza Pradhananga et al.

Summary: Between 2010 and 2019 in Nepal, there was a decreasing trend in Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) for Protein-Energy Malnutrition (PEM) while high Body Mass Index (BMI) had an increasing trend. Females had higher DALYs for PEM than males, whereas males had higher DALYs for high BMI than females. In 2019, Nepal had the highest death rate for PEM compared to other South Asian countries. The burden of PEM in terms of DALY was higher in under-five children and elderly above 80 years old, while the population aged 65-69 years had the highest burden of high BMI. Over the past decade, DALYs for risk factors contributing to PEM such as child growth failure, unsafe water, sanitation and handwashing, and sub-optimal breastfeeding have declined in Nepal, while DALYs for risk factors contributing to high BMI, such as a diet high in sugar-sweetened beverages, a diet high in trans fatty acid, and low physical activity, have increased. This could explain the increasing trend of high BMI and decreasing trend of PEM.
