Cognitive determinants of community functioning and quality of life in homeless adults with mental illness: 6-year follow-up from the At Home/Chez Soi Study Toronto site

K. M. Gicas et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between cognition and community functioning as well as subjective quality of life among homeless individuals. Results showed that cognition was associated with better community functioning, but not with quality of life. The study also found that resilience has a protective effect on subjective quality of life, although it does not moderate outcomes.

Homelessness and rates of physical dysfunctions characteristic of premature geriatric syndromes: systematic review and meta-analysis

Kevin Suh et al.

Summary: This study found that homeless adults have a higher risk of premature geriatric syndromes, with rates of limitations in activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living being 30-50% higher than housed adults and fall rates being three times higher than controls. These results highlight the need for healthcare providers such as physical therapists to address physical dysfunction in homeless adults.

Application of the frailty framework among vulnerable populations to hospitalization outcomes of individuals experiencing homelessness in Long Beach, California

Dennis G. Fisher et al.

Summary: The study found that predictors of hospitalization for those experiencing homelessness at follow-up include crack cocaine use, income from Social Security or disability, reporting homelessness, being female, and identifying as Black race/ethnicity. Income from social safety nets may help individuals access healthcare.

Summary: The study aims to develop guidance to support the conduct of rapid reviews, with 26 recommendations presented based on survey results. These recommendations will help synthesize evidence for urgent health issues, but the guidance will need to be updated as new evaluations for some RR methods are conducted due to the current lack of available evidence.

Nutrition and Frailty: Opportunities for Prevention and Treatment

Mary Ni Lochlainn et al.

Summary: Frailty, a syndrome of increasing importance in the context of the global aging population, is considered to have poor nutritional status as a key contributing factor. Observational evidence suggests that dietary quality, including patterns like the Mediterranean diet, may play a protective role in frailty risk. Further research and well-designed trials are needed to determine the causal effects of nutrition on frailty risk and progression, and how dietary changes can be utilized for prevention and treatment.
