The Influence of Cyberbullying on Nonsuicidal Self-Injury and Suicidal Thoughts and Behavior in a Psychiatric Adolescent Sample

Summary: This exploratory study found that any form of cyberbullying is significantly associated with nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). Victims of online rumors are over fifteen times more likely to engage in NSSI, and all participants involved in illicit photographs also endorsed NSSI. Additionally, individuals who endorsed involvement in an online rumor were nearly seventeen times more likely to report a history of suicide attempts.

Concurrent changes in nonsuicidal self-injury and suicide thoughts and behaviors

Summary: This study found that changes in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) frequency over time are related to subsequent changes in suicide thoughts and behaviors. Individuals with sharper declines in NSSI also showed sharper declines in suicide ideation. Those with high NSSI frequency at baseline tended to report higher suicide planning over time. The findings suggest the importance of monitoring suicide risk among those with NSSI, and that reducing NSSI may also reduce suicide risk.

Cyber-victimization and Suicidal Ideation in Adolescents: A Longitudinal Moderated Mediation Model

Summary: Cyber-victimization is a significant risk factor for adolescents' suicidal ideation. This study revealed that the effect of cyber-victimization on suicidal ideation was mediated by hopelessness and moderated by mindfulness and perceived social support. Fostering mindfulness and providing social support can attenuate the negative effects of cyber-victimization on adolescents' suicidal ideation.

This study found a significant quadratic interaction between age and gender on NSSI prevalence, with NSSI more common in females ages 16-19. A Cyberbullying Media-Based Prevention Intervention for Adolescents on Instagram: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of a remote app-based intervention called IMPACT to prevent cyberbullying among adolescents over a period of 16 weeks.
