Wastewater surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 and chemical markers in campus dormitories in an evolving COVID-19 pandemic

Sanjeeb Mohapatra et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive wastewater surveillance testing program was implemented at a university campus in Singapore to identify SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals and monitor the usage of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and other emerging contaminants (ECs). The program measured SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations in wastewater from campus dormitories using RT-qPCR and correlated the results with the number of symptomatic COVID-19 cases. The study also detected a wide range of ECs, including disinfectants and antibiotics, through LC-MS/MS techniques to establish PPCPs consumption patterns during different stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in Singapore.

Virucidal Activities of Acidic Electrolyzed Water Solutions with Different pH Values against Multiple Strains of SARS-CoV-2

Yohei Takeda et al.

Summary: Acidic electrolyzed water (AEW) demonstrates virucidal activity against SARS-CoV-2. In this study, AEW solutions with lower pH values showed stronger virucidal activity against different strains of SARS-CoV-2. These findings provide useful knowledge for the effective use of AEW as a SARS-CoV-2 disinfectant.

Resolving the health vs environment dilemma with sustainable disinfection during the COVID-19 pandemic

Wanru Chen et al.

Summary: The overuse of disinfection during the COVID-19 pandemic poses a dilemma between health and environment. It is crucial to avoid irresponsible and unnecessary disinfection while conducting comprehensive evaluation on the health and environmental impacts of different disinfectants. From the discussion, we tentatively conclude that hydrogen peroxide and UV irradiation are sustainable and green disinfection methods with minimal impacts.

Ecotoxicity of plant extracts and essential oils: A review

Celso Afonso Ferraz et al.

Summary: Plant-based products such as essential oils and extracts have been widely used and produced in large quantities, potentially reaching the environment. Recent research has focused on the toxic effects of these products on non-target organisms, particularly in aquatic environments. While some products showed no toxicity or only at high concentrations, others were found to be toxic at very low levels, emphasizing the need for further standardized research in this area.

Abundance, fate, and effects of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in aquatic environments

Adeyemi S. Adeleye et al.

Summary: Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are commonly found in wastewater and the environment, primarily entering municipal wastewater systems through human excretion and also from hospitals, PPCPs manufacturers, and agriculture. The most abundant PPCPs in raw wastewater include analgesics, antibiotics, and stimulants. In conventional wastewater treatment plants, most removal of PPCPs occurs during secondary treatment, with an overall removal rate exceeding 90%.

Farmers' cognition of the COVID-19 outbreak, risk perception and willingness of green production

Lei Luo et al.

Summary: This paper reviews and comments on the effects and mechanisms of influence between people's risk perceptions and willingness to engage in green production during the COVID-19 outbreak. The results show that increasing farmers' cognition of the outbreak can significantly enhance their willingness to participate in green production, with risk perception acting as an important transmission medium for this effect. Additionally, the analysis reveals that the impact of the outbreak cognition on green production willingness is significant for both the new and old generations of farmers.

A new class of quaternary ammonium compounds as potent and environmental friendly disinfectants

Guodong Wang et al.

Summary: A new type of disinfectant containing zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) was synthesized and showed higher antimicrobial effect against bacteria compared to traditional quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs). The disinfectant exhibited enhanced bactericidal toxicity at nanomolar concentrations when combined with specific light wavelengths. Furthermore, it was safe for mammalian cells and environmentally friendly due to its degradation under sunlight illumination.

Increased use of sanitizers and disinfectants during the COVID-19 pandemic: identification of antimicrobial chemicals and considerations for aquatic environmental contamination

Sarah C. Marteinson et al.

Summary: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the increased use of antimicrobial products for personal and environmental decontamination has raised concerns about their potential as aquatic contaminants. This study aims to identify current antimicrobial active ingredients, quantify their increased use, and determine their potential environmental impacts. The results show that certain antimicrobials have the potential to reach aquatic ecosystems and pose risks to aquatic biota. Further research and monitoring are recommended.

Prospects of Coffee Leaf against SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Chen-Shiou Wu et al.

Summary: This research explores natural plant extracts that have the potential to combat SARS-CoV-2 and provide alternative options for prevention and disinfection. The study identifies coffee leaf extract as an effective inhibitor of SARS-CoV-2 infection in various strains. Additionally, the extract proves to be more potent at preventing viral entry into cells when applied topically than the standard disinfectant ethanol. Compounds such as caffeine, chlorogenic acid, quinic acid, and mangiferin are found to be associated with the extract's antiviral activity.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on household disinfectant consumption behaviors and related environmental concerns: A questionnaire-based survey in China

Jie Guo et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant increase in household disinfectant consumption and usage levels in China, with chlorine-based and alcohol-based disinfectants being the most preferred products for household disinfection and hand sanitization. However, the Chinese public's environmental perceptions and practices regarding disinfectants were found to be poor, with less than half of respondents showing positive attitudes towards controlling disinfectant pollution. Targeted efforts may be needed for population groups such as females, middle-aged adults, healthcare professionals, and those with higher education levels to improve future control of disinfectant pollution in the environment.
