Variation in metal concentrations across a large contamination gradient is reflected in stream but not linked riparian food webs

Johanna M. Kraus et al.

Summary: Aquatic insects accumulate contaminants that can increase exposure for riparian insectivores, but the metal concentration gradient is lost during metamorphosis, leading to a decoupling of terrestrial exposures from aquatic concentrations. This study suggests less efficient trophic transfer and higher metamorphic loss of trace metals from high metal streams, reducing the importance of aquatic-terrestrial dietary transfer for terrestrial insectivores.

Enhanced Rare Earth Element Mobilization in a Mountain Watershed of the Colorado Mineral Belt with Concomitant Detection in Aquatic Biota: Increasing Climate Change-Driven Degradation to Water Quality

Garrett P. Rue et al.

Summary: In the western USA, acid mine drainage (AMD) and natural acid rock drainage (ARD) from historic mining activities impact stream water quality, particularly in the Snake River watershed where warmer summer temperatures enhance weathering processes. This results in increased rare earth element (REE) concentrations in streams, which can also accumulate in benthic invertebrates.
