Disturbance of the Circadian System in Shift Work and Its Health Impact

Diane B. Boivin et al.

Summary: Non-standard work schedules disrupt the circadian system and sleep of shift workers, leading to a higher risk of various medical conditions. Despite attempts to adapt, the circadian system remains resistant to transitioning from day to night schedules, resulting in internal desynchronization and disturbances in gene expression.

Behavioural characteristics and abdominal obesity among Brazilian shift working women

Heloisa Theodoro et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between behavioural characteristics and abdominal obesity among female shift workers in Southern Brazil, finding that factors such as night shift work, smoking, and infrequent meals were associated with an increased prevalence of abdominal obesity. The results suggest that behavioral modifications, such as increasing meal frequency and physical activity, may help reduce abdominal obesity among women working shifts.
