Geometric design, deformation mode, and energy absorption of patterned thin-walled structures

Jiayao Ma et al.

Summary: Thin-walled structures have been widely used as energy absorption devices due to their lightweight, high energy dissipating capability through large deformation, and low cost. This paper reviews the geometric design, deformation mode and mechanism, and energy absorption of patterned structures in the form of tubes, foldcores, and metamaterials. The main achievements and limitations of existing works are summarized, and suggestions for future research challenges are provided.

Mechanical performance and cushioning energy absorption characteristics of rigid polyurethane foam at low and high strain rates

Youcai Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical response of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) under different strain rates and densities. The results indicate that the static compressive behavior of RPUF is significantly influenced by density and strain rate, while the dynamic compressive behavior is mainly determined by density. The effect of strain rate is not significant at higher strain rates. The elastic modulus, compressive strength, and yield stress of RPUF increase with density. The experimental results show that the compressive strength is enhanced under high strain rate loading compared to quasi-static loading. The variation in energy absorption and efficiency with respect to RPUF density is studied, and the typical damage mechanisms of RPUF with different densities are investigated using scanning electron microscopy.

Impact response of a novel sandwich structure with Kirigami modified corrugated core

Zhejian Li et al.

Summary: The novel Kirigami modified corrugated core has demonstrated superior crushing performance under dynamic loading, outperforming the conventional corrugated core in impact resistance. The vertical fold-ins of the Kirigami modified core provide additional support, increasing the crushing resistance of unit cells.

Energy absorption behaviour of an aluminium foam-filled circular-triangular nested tube energy absorber under impact loading

Yonghui Wang et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel aluminium foam-filled circular-triangular nested tube (AFCTNT) energy absorber and investigated its energy absorption behavior under impact loading through experimental and numerical studies. It was found that the deformation modes of the AFCTNT energy absorbers were significantly affected by the volume of the aluminium foam filler, and filling aluminium foam improved the energy absorption performances, including higher energy absorption and efficiency. Both experimental and numerical results indicated that the AFCTNT energy absorber with fully-filled aluminium foam outperformed other configurations due to a more significant interaction effect.
