Experimental and numerical study on the microstructure and chloride ion transport behavior of concrete-to-concrete interface

Jin Xia et al.

Summary: This study determined the microstructural characteristics of concrete-to-concrete interfaces with various preparation methods. The results showed the formation of microcracks and CaCO3 precipitations in the interface, resulting in higher porosity compared to the matrix and interface transition zone. This higher tortuosity of water transport channel and increased solution absorption rate led to deeper diffusion of chloride ions and ingress into the concrete on both sides, causing a diffusion peak formation.

Effect of curing regime on the immobilization of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash in sustainable cement mortar

Baoju Liu et al.

Summary: Stabilizing/solidificating municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MIFA) with cement is a common strategy. This study investigated the high-value utilization of MIFA in ordinary Portland cement (OPC) components. Binary-binding-system mortar was produced by partially replacing OPC with MIFA, and the effects of different curing regimes on the properties of the cement mortar were studied. The results showed that steam curing and carbonation curing improved the strength and performance of MIFA-modified mortar.

Corrosion prediction models for steel bars in chloride-contaminated concrete: a review

Jin Xia et al.

Summary: This study provides a summary of corrosion prediction models for chloride-contaminated concrete, focusing on the definition methods and selection of electrochemical parameters. The study confirms the feasibility of using Aa/Ac and CCl,crit parameters, as well as the modifications related to free chloride concentration. However, it also highlights the lack of time-dependent characteristics of electrochemical parameters in the existing literature.

Galvanic Corrosion Study between Tensile-Stressed and Non-Stressed Carbon Steels in Simulated Concrete Pore Solution

Zheng Dong et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the galvanic effect between tensile-stressed and non-stressed carbon steels, as well as the influence of tensile stress on the passivation and corrosion behavior of steel in simulated concrete pore solution. It was found that tensile stress reduced the resistance of the oxide film and increased the charge transfer resistance. During corrosion, the tensile-stressed steel exhibited lower or similar charge transfer resistance compared to the non-stressed steel, particularly under plastic tensile stress. Additionally, the galvanic effect between the tensile-stressed and non-stressed steels increased the chloride threshold value of the tensile-stressed steel.

Effect of random aggregate distribution on chloride-induced corrosion morphology of steel in concrete

Summary: This study investigates the influence of random aggregate distribution on the regularity and variability of steel corrosion morphology. The results show that random aggregate distribution causes a non-uniform distribution of corrosion parameters and affects the degree and morphology of corrosion.

Use of XPS for quantitative evaluation of tensile-stress-induced degradation of passive film on carbon steel in simulated concrete pore solution

Zijian Song et al.

Summary: In this study, the degradation of the passive film on carbon steel under tensile stress was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The shedding ratio was proposed as a novel concept to quantify the degradation level of the passive film, and a computational model was derived based on XPS reanalysis. Electrochemical tests confirmed that the shedding ratio increases with applied tensile stress and has an inversely proportional relationship with polarization resistance. Additionally, partial recovery of the passive film degradation was observed after the stress was removed. Overall, the shedding-ratio model based on XPS reanalysis proves to be effective in quantitatively characterizing the degradation level of passive film and warrants further exploration.
