Experimental study on shear behavior of joints in precast concrete segmental bridges

Yu Zou et al.

Summary: A new shear key was designed and tested in this study, showing that the steel shear keyed joints have higher stiffness and shear capacity compared to concrete keyed joints. The horizontal prestressed system is more stable at the moment of cracking. The mechanical properties of the inserted reinforcement keyed joint are not suitable for use as a shear key. Among the various joints, steel shear keyed joints have smaller shear slips.

Experimental and numerical investigations on shear behavior of large keyed tooth joints

Yulin Zhan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the shear behavior of keyed tooth joints (KTJ) in precast concrete segmental bridges through experimental tests and numerical simulation. The results show that KTJ with epoxy bonding has significantly higher shear capacity than dry KTJ. Additionally, large KTJ performs better in shear than KTJ with multiple small keys. Adding internal reinforcements strengthens the connection and changes the failure mode from shear to crushing. Finite element models indicate that adding longitudinal reinforcement is more effective than stirrups in enhancing the load-bearing capacity and ductility of the reinforced large KTJ. Bakhoum’s formula provides the most accurate prediction for the experimental results. The study suggests using epoxied joint with reinforced large shear key in precast concrete segmental bridges.

Experimental and numerical investigations on shear performance of key tooth joints of precast concrete segmental bridge under repeated loading

Yulin Zhan et al.

Summary: Precast concrete segmental bridge (PCSB) has gained rapid development due to its advantages of fast construction speed, minimal environmental impact, easy quality control, and cost-effectiveness. Key tooth joint (KTJ), as the critical connection part of PCSB, has limited research on its performance under repeated loading. This study conducts experimental and numerical investigations on the behavior of adhesive KTJ under repeated loading. The study includes different configurations of KTJ, such as geometries of keys, number of keys, reinforcement in the key, and steel fibers in concrete. The results show that KTJ with small keys and a single large key exhibit similar behavior when the contact areas are the same, but the large key is stiffer. Compared to monotonic loading, KTJ's load-bearing capacity and stiffness are significantly reduced under repeated loading due to damage accumulation in concrete. Adding steel fibers in the concrete can enhance the ductility of KTJ, while adding reinforcement in the large key can reduce damage accumulation effects. The developed finite element models of KTJ under repeated loading align well with experimental results in terms of cracking development, load-displacement behavior, and load carrying capacity.

Shear behavior of joints in precast UHPC segmental bridges under direct shear loading

Meng Ye et al.

Summary: The shear behavior of different joint types in precast ultra-high-performance concrete segmental bridges was studied. It was found that epoxy joints have higher shear capacity, and the shear capacity of UHPC joints improves with increased confining stress and number of keys.

Full-scale experimental study on shear behavior of multiple-keyed epoxy joints in precast concrete segmental bridges

Yongping Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental investigation of the shear behavior of full-scale multiple-keyed epoxy joints under direct shear, considering the parameters of joint type, confining stress, epoxy thickness, and key geometry. The crack patterns and failure modes of the test specimens were obtained and the influences of the parameters on the shear capacity were discussed. A new analytical prediction model that fully considers the uneven distribution of shear stress in the shear plane was derived based on Mohr's stress circle, which can accurately predict the shear strength of epoxy joints.

Direct shear behavior of precast panel connections with cast-in-place shear keys using steel fiber-reinforced cementitious mortar (SFRCM)

Sang-Hyun Park et al.

Summary: In this study, an experimental investigation was conducted on the direct shear behavior of precast panel connections using steel fiber-reinforced cementitious mortar shear keys. The experiment revealed significant effects of steel fiber volume fractions and shear key details and configurations on the shear behavior of panel connections. The analytical model proposed based on experimental and theoretical results showed good correlation with the experimental outcomes.
