Accelerated bone regeneration through rational design of magnesium phosphate cements

Friederike Kaiser et al.

Summary: Results of several studies have shown that magnesium phosphate cements (MPCs) have excellent biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, and higher solubility compared to calcium phosphates, making them promising alternatives to slowly degrading calcium phosphate cements. Decreasing the powder-liquid ratio (PLR) of the cement can further improve the degradation speed, with the potential for fast bone ingrowth within a few months. However, further modifications may be needed, especially for the K-struvite cement, to achieve a slower resorption and reduced inflammatory response in vivo.

Development and characterization of magnesium phosphate cement based ultra-high performance concrete

Jihui Qin et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop magnesium phosphate cement-based ultra-high-performance concrete (MPC-UHPC) with improved properties through reducing water-to-cement ratio and adding ultrafine fly ash. The experimental results show that reducing water-to-cement ratio can increase mechanical strengths and decrease shrinkage, but it leads to a decrease in workability and an increase in autogenous shrinkage. Adding ultrafine fly ash can effectively improve fresh properties and reduce autogenous shrinkage. The optimal MPC-UHPC exhibits lower shrinkage, higher early strength, and comparable 28-day strength when compared to conventional UHPC.

Effect of roughness on bonding performance between Portland cement concrete and magnesium phosphate cement concrete

Suhui Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the bonding performance between magnesium phosphate cement concrete (MPC) and ordinary portland cement concrete (OPC) with different roughness. The results showed a positive correlation between roughness and bonding performance, with the bonding interface categorized into two forms: MPC paste bonding to OPC paste, and MPC paste bonding to the aggregate.

Preparation and properties of a low-cost magnesium phosphate cement with the industrial by-products boron muds

Jincheng Yu et al.

Summary: Boron muds are by-products in borax production which can cause serious environmental issues due to their small particle size and high alkalinity. Calcined boron muds can be used as raw materials for MPC, partially substituting dead burned MgO. The MPC pastes with partial substitution showed good performance, indicating a feasible solution for dealing with the piled boron muds.

Effect of water content on microstructure and properties of magnesium potassium phosphate cement pastes with different magnesia-to-phosphate ratios

Jihui Qin et al.

Summary: The study found that at high M/P ratios, lower W/C was enough for KH2PO4 hydration, while higher W/C led to looser microstructure. However, a clear W/C threshold effect was observed in medium M/P ratios, where low W/C below stoichiometric value suppressed the formation of K-struvite and favored the presence of an amorphous phase, resulting in intense early shrinkage, low early compressive strength, and poor long-term water resistance.

Bond performance of repair mortar made with magnesium phosphate cement and ferroaluminate cement

Liang Jia et al.

Summary: This study focuses on investigating the bond performance of mortar with magnesium phosphate cement as a novel-type repair material, and finds that incorporating ferroaluminate cement can significantly enhance the mechanical properties and water resistance of the composite cement. The rough substrate interface contributes to the improvement of flexural bond strength.

Rheological properties of magnesium phosphate cement with different M/P ratios

Cong Ma et al.

Summary: Experimental results confirm that a higher M/P ratio accelerates the initial hydration rate of MPC, reducing plastic viscosity and yield stress. The most important factor influencing the rheological properties of MPC is the initial hydration rate, followed by the separation distance among solid particles.

Assessment of magnesium potassium phosphate cement for waste sludge solidification: Macro- and micro-analysis

Dongxing Wang et al.

Summary: The feasibility and performance of eco-friendly and sustainable magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKPC) for solidifying urban river sludge are evaluated, showing that an increase in MKPC dosage and curing age enhances compressive strength of solidified samples. The major hydration phase, struvite-k, effectively fills large pores and refines pore structure. Introducing MKPC as a substitute for Portland cement (PC) in sludge solidification shows mechanical, eco-friendly, and cost-efficient benefits.
