Remediation of ciprofloxacin in soil using peroxymonosulfate activated by ball-milled seaweed kelp biochar: Performance, mechanism, and phytotoxicity

Md Abdullah Al Masud et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of physically modified ball-milled kelp-seaweed biochar (KBCBM) in catalyzing the degradation of CIP-contaminated soil using peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and examines the phytotoxicity of the intermediates in the treated soil. The surface characterization of the KBCBM catalyst was studied using various instrumental analyses. The CIPsoil/KBCBM/PMS system showed excellent efficiency in CIP degradation (96.06%) under specific conditions. The presence of certain anions enhanced the CIP degradation, while other anions and organic matter had negligible effects. Reactive oxygen species formation was confirmed, and a non-radical reaction pathway was identified. The KBCBM/PMS system demonstrated promising potential for the treatment of CIP-contaminated soil.

Applications of Computational and Statistical Models for Optimizing the Electrochemical Removal of Cephalexin Antibiotic from Water

Maliheh Arab et al.

Summary: One of the serious effects of micropollutants in the environment is biological magnification, which has adverse effects on both humans and the ecosystem. This study used an aluminum-based electrocoagulation unit to remove cephalexin antibiotics, a model of antibiotics, from water. Computational and statistical models were applied to optimize the key parameters for the electrochemical removal of cephalexin, and the results showed that the ANFIS model predicted and interpreted the experimental results better than the ANN and RSM-CCD models.

Hadi Akbarian et al.

Summary: Decision Support System (DSS) is a novel approach for smart, sustainable controlling of environmental phenomena and purification processes. In this study, Fusarium Solani fungi are utilized as the engine of the toluene bioremediation procedure for the monitoring part of DSS. The behavior of the fungi is estimated by machine learning algorithms, and the control stage of DSS is provided by integrated modeling and analysis techniques. The findings show the importance of ventilation intensity and fungi load/biological waste in the process.

Removal of pharmaceuticals and ecotoxicological changes in wastewater using Trametes versicolor : A comparison of fungal stirred tank and trickle-bed bioreactors

Rebeca Tormo-Budowski et al.

Summary: Hospital wastewater is rich in pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), which can end up in the environment due to the lack of effective treatments. White rot fungi, specifically Trametes versicolor, have shown to be an effective solution for this problem. Immobilizing the fungi in a lignocellulosic substrate has proved successful in treating wastewater. Two types of bioreactors, stirred tank and trickle-bed, were used in this study to treat synthetic and real hospital wastewater with T. versicolor. The trickle-bed bioreactor showed promising results in removing pharmaceuticals and detoxifying real wastewater.
