Fish scale-based biochar with defined pore size and ultrahigh specific surface area for highly efficient adsorption of ciprofloxacin

Shuai Dou et al.

Summary: The fish scale-based porous activated biochar with defined pore size (DPBC) fabricated in this study exhibited a high specific surface area and pore diameter suitable for the adsorption of CIP. The adsorption process was found to be spontaneous and endothermic, with a high saturated dynamic adsorption capacity of 880.3 mg g(-1) in fixed-bed experiments. Various interactions including hydrophobic effect, pi-pi interaction, cation exchange, and hydrogen bonding were involved in the CIP adsorption on the DPBC.

Upgrading biochar by co-pyrolysis of heavy bio-oil and apricot shell using response surface methodology

Xiaozhuang Zhuang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the production of biochar by co-pyrolysis of heavy bio-oil and apricot shell, finding that co-pyrolysis had a synergistic effect on improving the mass yield and fuel quality of biochar. Furthermore, the C/H ratio of biochar increased with higher pyrolysis temperature, residence time, and percentage of heavy bio-oil, indicating enhanced aromaticity.

Multi-response optimization of sewage sludge-derived hydrochar production and its CO2-assisted gasification performance

Shuai Guo et al.

Summary: This study optimized the preparation and gasification performance of sewage sludge hydrochar through the use of response surface methodology. The optimal conditions for hydrochar yield, higher heating value, and gasification activity index were determined by varying the carbonization temperature, residence time, and acetic acid concentration. The results provide valuable insights for guiding sewage sludge hydrothermal carbonization and further optimization of thermochemical conversion.

Prediction of pyrolyzate yields by response surface methodology: A case study of cellulose and polyethylene co-pyrolysis

Shengyu Xie et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of response surface methodology (RSM) in predicting pyrolyzate yields affected by synergies during co-pyrolysis of cellulose and polyethylene. Results show that co-pyrolysis enhances liquid and C5-28 hydrocarbon production with increasing temperature. The quadratic and cubic models can accurately predict various yields under different synergistic conditions.

Taguchi-based process optimization for activation of agro-food waste biochar and performance test for dye adsorption

Biswa R. Patra et al.

Summary: The optimization of process parameters for biochar activation is crucial for enhancing its surface area and adsorptive potentials. KOH-assisted chemical activation of biochar at 800 degrees C for 90 min was found to be optimal with higher specific surface areas. The performances of biochar and activated carbon samples were evaluated through the adsorption of common dyes, showing promising results for activated biochar derived from food waste and agricultural crop residues.

Waste valorization: Transforming the fishbone biowaste into biochar as an efficient persulfate catalyst for degradation of organic pollutant

Xiaoya Ren et al.

Summary: This research successfully valorized fishbone waste by transforming it into biochar as a persulfate activator for phenol removal, demonstrating efficient waste utilization and pollution treatment. The prepared FBBC showed high catalytic efficiency due to its large surface area and unique structure, promoting phenol degradation through both radical and non-radical pathways in the persulfate/phenol system.

Catalytic fast pyrolysis of waste mixed cloth for the production of value-added chemicals

Jun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the catalytic fast pyrolysis of waste mixed cloth using hierarchical HZSM and commercial CaO. The use of HZSM contributed to the production of monocyclic and dicyclic chemicals, while CaO showed strong deoxygenation performance for the transformation into low oxygen-containing chemicals. This research highlights a feasible route for upgrading waste mixed cloth into value-added chemicals.
