Understanding FRET in Upconversion Nanoparticle Nucleic Acid Biosensors

Shashi Bhuckory et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of surface coatings, bioconjugation, and dye-surface distance on FRET biosensing performance between UCNP and dyes was investigated using DNA-hybridization assays. The results showed that direct bioconjugation of DNA to the thin PAA coating combined with the closest possible dye-surface distance resulted in optimal FRET performance with minimal interference from H2O quenching. This improved understanding of UCNP-to-dye FRET was successfully translated into a miR-20a FRET assay with a limit of detection of 100 fmol in a sample volume of 80 μL.

Topological visualization of the plasmonic resonance of a nano C-aperture

Mohammad Asif Zaman et al.

Summary: The plasmonic response of a nano C-aperture is analyzed using the Vector Field Topology (VFT) visualization technique. The induced electrical currents on the metal surfaces and the topology of the current density vector are calculated and analyzed. A distinct shift in the topology is found to coincide with the plasmonic resonance condition, leading to increased current circulation. Numerical results support the claims and suggest that VFT is a powerful tool for studying nano-photonic structures.
