Liver fat content assessed by conventional B-mode ultrasound and metabolic profile in non-diabetic patients: Implications for clinical practice

Summary: This study found a potential association between the severity of hepatic steatosis and clinical patterns in a non-diabetic population. Patients with steatosis had higher levels of insulin and fasting plasma glucose, as well as lower levels of high-density lipoprotein. All grades of steatosis were associated with increased triglyceride levels, with more significant differences observed in severe steatosis. Additionally, patients with steatosis had a higher prevalence of a decline in kidney function.

Role of Ultrasound Methods for the Assessment of NAFLD

Summary: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent liver disease worldwide, especially among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The diagnosis of NAFLD and identification of advanced fibrosis are important aims in clinical practice. Liver biopsy can provide this information but is invasive and has potential complications. Non-invasive techniques, such as ultrasound, have been developed to stage fibrosis. This review focuses on various ultrasound methods and elastography techniques for detecting and grading hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in NAFLD patients, with attention given to the application and limitations in overweight patients. The role of B-mode ultrasound in screening for hepatocellular carcinoma in NAFLD patients is also outlined.

Accuracy of controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) and liver stiffness measurement (LSM) for assessing steatosis and fibrosis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This meta-analysis evaluated the performance of controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) and liver stiffness measurement (LSM) in assessing steatosis and fibrosis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The results showed that CAP and LSM had good performance in diagnosing mild steatosis, advanced liver fibrosis, and cirrhosis, making them useful for screening NAFLD in high-risk populations. However, the accuracy of CAP in detecting steatosis is reduced in patients with obesity and requires specific diagnostic values. For LSM, the same diagnostic values can be used with appropriate probe selection based on body mass index (BMI) and an automated probe selection tool. Further validation and improvement of CAP and LSM performance are needed for assessing steatosis in patients with obesity, moderate to severe steatosis, and low-grade fibrosis.

Summary: This study compared the diagnostic accuracy of point shear wave elastography (pSWE) and transient elastography (TE) in evaluating fibrosis stage in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The results showed that TE was significantly better than pSWE in diagnosing fibrosis stage >= F2, while there were no significant differences between TE and pSWE in diagnosing fibrosis stage >= F1, >= F3, and F4.

Accuracy of Two-Dimensional Shear Wave Elastography and Attenuation Imaging for Evaluation of Patients With Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis

Summary: In this study, a multiparametric approach using attenuation imaging and 2D-SWE was evaluated for the detection of steatosis and fibrosis in NAFLD patients. The attenuation coefficient was associated with steatosis grade, liver stiffness with fibrosis stage, and SWDS with lobular inflammation. A risk scoring system based on these parameters showed high accuracy in identifying patients with steatohepatitis.
