Respiratory muscle function in the newborn: a narrative review

Theodore Dassios et al.

Summary: Respiratory muscle function in premature infants and infants with congenital anomalies is impaired, with negative effects from prolonged ventilation and infection, and positive effects from caffeine and synchronized ventilation modes. Recent advancements in point-of-care diaphragmatic ultrasound and neurally adjusted ventilator assist have significant clinical applicability in assessing and treating respiratory muscle function.

Point-of-care lung and diaphragm ultrasound in a patient with spinal muscular atrophy with respiratory distress type 1

Beatrice Berti et al.

Summary: SMARD1 is a rare genetic disease characterized by respiratory distress and muscular weakness. Despite the diaphragm being one of the main target organs of the disease, there is a lack of specific ultrasound studies conducted on this aspect.

A narrative review of diaphragmatic ultrasound in pediatric critical care

Mark D. Weber et al.

Summary: The use of point of care ultrasound (POCUS) at the bedside has increased dramatically within emergency medicine and critical care, with applications now including diaphragmatic assessments in both adults and children. Different measurements provided by diaphragm POCUS offer objective data related to diaphragm dysfunction and atrophy, allowing for quick and noninvasive assessments at the bedside.
